The Theran (Akrotiri) Frescoes found on the Greek island of Santorini (ancient Thera), are dated to around 1600–1500 BCE, just before the Minoan eruption. These frescoes, discovered in the ruins of Akrotiri, show blue or grey monkeys, which scholars widely believe are langurs or Hanuman langurs native to the Indian subcontinent. They are in the “House of the Frescoes” or the “House of the Monkeys” in Akrotiri. The monkeys are depicted climbing rocks and interacting with human figures. Their morphology (long limbs, tail shape) doesn’t match African or Mediterranean primates like baboons or macaques. They most closely resemble Indian Hanuman langurs (Semnopithecus entellus). Langurs are native to India and the Himalayas, not to the Mediterranean. The presence of langurs in Aegean frescoes suggests early contact or knowledge of the Indian subcontinent. These could be exotic diplomatic or trade gifts brought via long-distance trade routes. The Minoans had extensive trade networks reaching the Near East, Egypt, and possibly further east. By 1500 BCE, Indus - Mesopotamia - Egypt - Levantine trade was flourishing. Indian animals or descriptions reached the Aegean via Mesopotamia or Egypt. This evidence contributes to the idea of Indo-Mediterranean connections much earlier than usually assumed. Early maritime contacts or indirect cultural exchanges existed between the Indus Valley / Indian subcontinent and the Aegean via Mesopotamia and Egypt, long before the Hellenistic period.
