If it's our behaviour and beliefs (including those about consciousness), then Dennett's view accounts for that

When we learned that heat was energy, we didn't deny the existence of heat, we just changed our concept of heat (although we did deny the existence of heat-as-fluid)

"Consciousness is an illusion, which is itself a state of consciousness" is self-contradictory. "Consciousness seems to have property X, but actually does not" is not.
