@boomhotdog2 @Anexitilos1 @25YearsAgoLive If you were to ask any of the people living there, including Constantine himself, they would all call themselves Roman. Romans had been speaking Greek for centuries, that is not a sole determinant of identity. The Greek Orthodox Church did not exist yet.

@nonfoot1 @Anexitilos1 @25YearsAgoLive Constantine was half Greek, who built Constantinople in Greek Anatolia; and the super-majority of people (up until 1453) who lived in Constantinople were Greeks who spoke Greek and adhered to the Greek Orthodox Church

Pope John Paul II lands in Athens to begin a papal visit to Greece. He officially apologizes for the Crusader attack on Constantinople in 1204 on behalf of the Catholic Church.

@multistanforfun @Anexitilos1 @25YearsAgoLive Yes, Constantine founded Constantinople. This is an undisputed fact. Don’t confuse the Roman city with the previous Greek settlement called Byzantion. You contradicted yourself in your own statement.

@nonfoot1 @Anexitilos1 @25YearsAgoLive Do you think the emperor Constantine founded the city? 😆 go open a book. The city existed centuries before Constantine and it was called Byzantium by the Byzas, the Greek settler who built it

@tresbarletta @CoachJeff_ @UpdatingOnRome The Romans were a world power and the strongest in Europe in 1053. Even through to 1204 they were a world power and were largely responsible for the creation of the first crusade. Not sure how that is irrelevant.

@CoachJeff_ @UpdatingOnRome I do agree though, the byzantines were irrelevant for the last 400 years of their existence essentially, which is almost twice as long as the US has existed. Got complacent as a civilization

@Anexitilos1 @25YearsAgoLive Do you genuinely believe that Roman Emperor Constantine I was Greek? I’d recommend reading a book on the subject.

@Jia8088 @suviesuvorov Only a portion of the Roman Empire was conquered, whereas the Sassanians were conquered outright. The Romans would end up outlasting the Arab caliphates.

@LizziePoste You are referring to the Holy Roman Empire (A confederation of Germanic states in Western Europe), not to be confused with the Roman Empire based in Constantinople.

@IVS_SANGVINIS @RealBobFilner @NobodyIsOurGuy @buzzforthewin It’s as you said, most were illiterate and uneducated. They wouldn’t be able to see the connection, and even if they did, the languages that descended from Latin were mixed with various Germanic languages, helping form their separate identities.

@ClownishFeats @LokiTrickst3r @DevilzFartbox The “Holy Roman Empire” and Roman Empire are two different entities. The “Holy Roman Empire” is a Germanic confederation that came after the fall of the western half of the Roman Empire.

Did you know, Easter is an originally a Pagan holiday that was STOLEN by the Christians.. yeah its about fertility - hence why we have Rabbits as the main mascot for said holiday. Its also when the land is most fertile - We celebrate Ostara - Not "Easter" in my house =)

@TheLostSheep22 @EndWokeness The Roman Empire and “Holy Roman Empire” are two different entities, but it is the Roman Empire that you’re thinking of. The “Holy Roman Empire” was a Germanic Empire based in Western Europe.

@jad3dgirl They are the same thing, Byzantium is just the name of the ancient settlement where Constantinople was founded. The term “Byzantine” is a modern label added by historians who wish to delegitimize the Roman Empire.

@mrspepperhot The Roman Empire and “Holy Roman Empire” are not the same thing, nor are they related in any way. The “Holy Roman Empire” is a German Empire that stole the Roman name to legitimize themselves.

@PriapusIQ a person with an upper middle class income today lives a better life than a Roman emperor at the height of the Roman Empire. If the emperor had a tooth infection back in the day, he was fucked.
