I had a baby preterm same time as this lady. I am still recovering psychologically from being partially separated from my son for the first month of his life. I cannot imagine if I had to go over TWO YEARS full separation. What this mother has been through
Reuters@Reuters

In a heart-rending moment, preterm babies who had been evacuated from a Gaza hospital and moved to Egypt for safety during the Israel-Hamas war were finally reunited with their mothers after two years as part of a United Nations mission reut.rs/4bQ6wmM

Also, yet another example of a prudent, live-below-your-means, NYer. This is really good! These are not hardships. He is making reasoned and rational choices, including choosing not to spend more on housing. Again, NYC has no housing "crisis" ... we successfully house more people across the income scale than any other American city and most global cities. nytimes.com/interactive/20…

@Madz_Grant I had a lambchop vhs tape called Don’t Wake Mom that I could put on by myself and then wake her up at the end. But I was 4 and I think parents are pretty much out of luck until that age

I've noticed amongst friends who have little kids that they are basically forced into waking up when they do. When I was little I remember v clearly knowing that we shouldn't go and wake parents until at least 9am on a weekend, and generally entertaining ourselves in the morning

i'm not an expert but posting about the nyt for a week and saying you want to do a hostile takeover to change its coverage seems to undermine the argument that the the nyt doesn't matter because you can "go direct" x.com/jason/status/2…
@jason@Jason

Too bad the nytimes is so closely held with supershares.. would be epic to buy it and send it straight to the middle, and take out the bias I guess the best we could do is to build a position and take a board seat? 🤔

What's something that experts/practitioners in your field universally agree upon, but that remains a "hot take" among the general public?

This is about trade offs. Number 1 is obviously true for some kids. But I’m willing to bet the number kids that are harmed by phones is much greater. And even within an individual kid, it’s possible the harms outweigh the good
Sturgeon's Law@Sturgeons_Law

Lorenz believes 3 things: 1. phones are a critical lifeline for kids to find liberatory info & community 2. every possible way of restricting their access is wrong 3. & also part of a larger reactionary agenda to oppress the public by restricting info & freedom of communication.

@djkgamc @MattZeitlin Oh online dating sucks, I'm not saying actually do it, but it is useful for just seeing what's around, and what's around is lots of women who want kids! Even the Pew Study has the majority definitely wanting kids.

@djkgamc @MattZeitlin I mean this gently -- this is probably who you're seeking out. For years I kept dating alcoholics and being like "huh. that's weird. most men must be alcoholics." Go on any dating app and filter for "wants kids" and you'll see plenty of women out there

@MattZeitlin i actually have this problem. i don’t have a girlfriend because all the relationships i’ve had the girl didn’t want to have kids. last person that wanted to marry me also didnt want to have kids. this isn’t easily solveable because it’s a mass population level trend

I know this post is rhetorical, but for anyone wondering the actual story behind this, there is a valid reason. Churches fall under A-3 Assembly Occupancy restrictions in the building codes, and these building codes restrict cooking in kitchens (in addition to other restrictions as well). If any church under A-3 Assembly Occupancy wants to have full cooking facilities, the building would have to be built under a much stricter A-2 or A-1 Assembly Occupancy, requiring complex fire suppression systems in addition to other building safety features (advanced fire notification systems, egress pathways for mass exiting in an emergency, etc). The cost difference between A-3 and A-2 Occupancy requirements is significant, and simply just not worth it for the church to build to just to be able to cook in the kitchens.
