Every Christian is a priest?? I understand why that sounds strange. But we have to be careful not to throw out what Scripture actually says. Saint Peter writes plainly: “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation…” (1 Peter 2:9) And again: “…to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.” (1 Peter 2:5) So yes, there is a real sense in which every baptized believer shares in a priesthood. We might call this the priesthood of the faithful. It means your life, your prayers, your obedience, your suffering offered to God—these are sacrifices. You stand before God. You belong to Him. But Scripture does not stop there. From the beginning, God also sets apart certain men for a distinct, ministerial role. In the Old Testament, not every Israelite was a priest. The Lord chose Aaron and his sons: “Take thou unto thee Aaron thy brother… that he may minister unto me in the priest’s office.” (Exodus 28:1) And in the New Testament, we see Christ giving authority in a particular way to His apostles: “As my Father hath sent me, even so send I you… Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them…” (John 20:21–23) This is not given to the crowd. It is given to those He appoints. Saint Paul speaks of this order continuing: “Let a man so account of us, as of the ministers of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God.” (1 Corinthians 4:1) So we are not choosing between two ideas. Both are true. There is a general priesthood, where all the faithful offer spiritual sacrifice. And there is a ministerial priesthood, where certain men are entrusted with the sacraments, the forgiveness of sins, and the stewardship of the Church. So when someone says, “every Christian is a priest,” we can say: Yes, but not in the same way. And if we lose that distinction, we lose something Christ Himself gave to His Church.
