For thousands of years, money has been backed by trust and gold, and protected by ships. However, in this millennium, money will now be backed by encryption and math, and protected by chips. bitcoinmagazine.com/markets/united…

JUST IN: The New York Times, following an 18-month investigation, has identified @adam3us as Satoshi Nakamoto, the anonymous creator of Bitcoin. Back denies the claim. Who do you think Satoshi is?

At this point, it matters less who Satoshi literally is than what the search for Satoshi force serious people to discover (the best cryptographers (Bitcoin founders) have ensured we will never actually find out). The mystery acts as a catalyst for inquiry: begin with the curiosity about identify, then are pushed into the real intellectual history of Bitcoin. Szabo, Back, Finney, Dai, proof-of-work, timestamping, coordination, trust minimization, and the Byzantine problem. In this sense, the pseudonym may have served a deeper purpose (apart from the important notion of immaculate conception in a decentralized network with no middle party). And the founders knew this learning process was vital to adoption, albeit a slow one. Becoming money requires this type of investigation: the process of revealing the history, explaining to others, which may then catalyze someone else to investigate further. This is how Bitcoin as new money comes into being. If you agree =]

i'm not satoshi, but I was early in laser focus on the positive societal implications of cryptography, online privacy and electronic cash, hence my ~1992 onwards active interest in applied research on ecash, privacy tech on cypherpunks list which led to hashcash and other ideas.

It represents a Nash equilibrium in a non-cooperative game: if everyone else uses Bitcoin, it is in your best interest to use Bitcoin too, creating a self-reinforcing network effect.

Or another way: The longer the horizon, the more the difficulty-adjusted process can smooth out local noise and pull realized halving intervals toward Bitcoin’s native 210,000-block cadence.

Over a long window, the difficulty-adjusted block process has more time to average out short-run deviations and express its target cadence more cleanly.

Many people talk about Bitcoin’s 1458-day cycle. The actual inter-halving intervals themselves appear to be converging toward that number.

Plum Crater is the site of one of the more famous photos from the Apollo missions, taken by Commander John Young showing Charlie Duke near the rim with the LRV in the background. (It's possible that Big Muley is the rock visible on the far rim in front of the rover.)

LM Pilot Charlie Duke picks up an 11.7 kg rock on the rim of Plum Crater during the first EVA of Apollo 16 on April 21, 1972. Nicknamed Big Muley, it's the largest lunar sample collected during the #Apollo missions.
