I know it’s very British, but we can’t keep having moral panics about computers every time we don’t want to admit we’ve torn the social contract to shreds Why, we cry, are they at home! There are abundant Saturday jobs, graduate schemes, and home ownership is but a skip away!

Exclusive from @eleanorhayward Britain is facing an “economic catastrophe” as young adults “rewired” by smartphones are becoming trapped in worklessness, a government review has found A landmark report into why one million young people are off work says businesses must adapt to this “anxious generation” by offering greater flexibility and mental health support Alan Milburn, a former health secretary, was appointed by Sir Keir Starmer to investigate the 946,000 16 to 24-year-olds not in education, employment or training, known as Neets His interim report, to be published next week, says that a “rising tide of mental ill-health, anxiety, depression, neurodiversity” is the main reason for high economic inactivity Milburn said that these young people “are not snowflakes or faking it”, adding that their heightened distress and anxiety is linked to growing up in a digital age on social media The review team held focus groups with young people, which revealed smartphones had led to poorer sleep and mental distress. “Every one of a group of ten 12 and 13-year-olds told us they went to bed between midnight and 3am because they were scrolling on their phone,” the review says Milburn said: “This is a bedroom generation. They are sort of living in their bedrooms. They are on all the time, they’re never off. [Social media] is leading to some evidence of functional impairment, changing their sleep patterns, concentration levels. That is having an impact on their ability to work “ thetimes.com/article/304dbf…

@GarethMacG @Cai_ParryJones It’s not often I’d agree with a reform member but he has a point here… they could be provided with identical functionality for 2/3 less cost.. I had a meeting with a planning officer the other day and she turned up with a pretty new surface and she’s basically doing admin…

The Senedd have given each member two £2000 laptops and offered a £1000 phone on top. That's approximately £300k all together on devices used primarily for Google Chrome.

@Cai_ParryJones iPhone 17 is £665 ex. VAT, Surfaces are heavily discounted for the public sector and are unlikely to exceed £1000 each ex. VAT They are also all likely to survive your entire term, meaning your end user compute is less than £700/pa. Quite reasonable and likely easy to support.

@SCFCJosh96 There are a non-insignificant group of knobheads that are really just wanting to lash out at any authority/establishment and are pretty Reform-y and I think is going to be the case anywhere. I don't think they represent the culture of the city at large.

@SCFCJosh96 That being said, "Liverpool" is left-wing. It's one of the only places in England I feel genuinely safe as an often visibly trans individual. A lot of neighbouring towns and cities are often plagued with Britain First/etc marches that just don't happen here.

@zorororonoa999 The whole "city" and wider region is such a mess boundary wise that it's always been almost impossible to govern effectively. My old ward has been independent for well over a decade and their little group has often held the balance of power.

@eastdakota @Hesamation Is this back office reduction going to affect support? I have been an Enterprise customer in the past and my support experience would lead me to strongly discourage Cloudflare whilst building even though the product is fantastic.

@Hesamation We’ll still be hiring at a rapid pace. This isn’t about cutting headcount. It’s about shifting what roles we need. More people building and selling product. Less providing back office functions to support them.
