Bublik -130 3U Not sure if the computers will agree with me here but this match is a major litmus test of ball knowledge. You might find the idea of backing Bublik on slow clay— his worst surface— against Baez— a clay court specialist— as a favorite to be ridiculous, and at almost any other tournament I’d probably agree with you But not in Rome. It’s never a question of ability with Bublik, but rather motivation. Too often he just doesn’t really give a shit about winning. His main priority is putting in a show for the crowd, but here, that means taking care of business. Rome has become a second home of sorts for Bublik— the crowd absolutely adores him here and will provide the lively atmosphere where he produces his best tennis. Sascha has raved about how much he loves playing there for his very reason. Don’t take it from me though— listen to the man himself in the video below. Even when he was the total clown version of Bublik who almost never gave a shit in any match, especially on slow clay, Rome still made him raise his level. He won two matches and then pushed Ruud to a third set tiebreak as a +440 underdog in 2023, and pushed Casper to a third set again as a +385 dog here last year. Fortunately, he’s on the other half of the draw this year, and we’re now talking about an entirely different Bublik. A player who’s cracked the Top 10 and currently sits at World #11. A Roland Garros quarterfinalist who posted a sparking 23-6 record on the dirt last year. A man who, for a lot more of the time than he used to, wants to win. …and while Baez is a tough customer on South American clay, he kinda fucking blows in Europe. Seriously— go look at his record disparity between the two continents. It’s remarkable. Sebita is still of course far from a pushover here, but he’s the furthest thing from a dangerous opponent. If Bublik is locked in, there isn’t much he can do. That’s sadly just kinda how being 5’7’’ works against elite competition at this level. Match will be on Sascha’s racket While some may point to Bublik’s recent mediocre form as cause for concern, it really doesn’t worry me. Wins over Monfils and Lehecka in Monte Carlo before bowing out to Alcaraz in the quarterfinals is a good result. He was never gonna give a shit about cold and rainy Munich which is sandwiched between two M1000s and had very little energy from the fans. Tsitsipas served incredibly well in the Madrid altitude. Talks of Bublik being poor lately are largely exaggerated, and truth be told I’d still be eager to back him here in Rome even if he’d gotten double bageled in his last three matches. Filthy casuals will say things like “Idk man he’s lost three matches in a row” or “You can just never trust Bublik bro,” but in Rome, that simply doesn’t matter / is not true. This is his happy place— what’s happened recently elsewhere is entirely irrelevant. In fact, it’s probably the spot on tour where I’m actually most confident that he’ll be locked in and giving maximum effort. I genuinely rank it above Wimbledon on the BMI (Bublik Motivation Index) scale. The crowd loves him, and he loves them back. We will see the very best version of Bublik here, and that’s a player with very few peers— one who certainly can’t be just -130 vs Sebastian Baez

I’ve been looking in to the logistics of starting a small glove Muay Thai promotion in the states and talking to promoters on how to put on shows etc… Would be a ton of work but man I see a huge ceiling for a show like that here! Should I take the leap??

Seen a lot of comments implying that Morgan Riddle in some way negatively impacted Taylor Fritz's career... He won a Masters 1000, became a consistent top 10 player and reached his first Grand Slam final while with her. Do these people really think if he hadn't been dating her, he'd be a multiple time major winner, beating Alcaraz and Sinner all the time?! 😅
