IROM SHARMILA carried out one of the LONGEST HUNGER STRIKES in modern political history 16 YEARS of sacrifice. Her protest began after 10 CIVILIANS were killed in MALOM, MANIPUR (2000). She vowed NOT TO EAT until the ARMED FORCES (SPECIAL POWERS) ACT (AFSPA) was repealed. AFSPA WAS NOT REPEALED. Instead of addressing her demand, the State REPEATEDLY ARRESTED her on charges related to attempted suicide. She was kept alive through FORCE FEEDING VIA A NASAL TUBE. Every time she was released, she RESUMED HER FAST. Every time she resumed, she was ARRESTED AGAIN. She sacrificed 16 YEARS of her life, lived in isolation, and even stayed away from her MOTHER, believing they would reunite only after AFSPA was repealed. That reunion NEVER HAPPENED during her protest. In 2016, after 16 YEARS, she ended her fast, saying: “I HAVE BEEN FASTING FOR 16 YEARS. I HAVEN’T GOT ANYTHING FROM IT.” She then chose the DEMOCRATIC PATH instead of violence and CONTESTED ELECTIONS to continue her fight. THE PEOPLE GAVE HER JUST 90 VOTES. NINETY. After 16 YEARS OF SACRIFICE, after enduring arrests, force-feeding, and unimaginable personal loss, the ballot box rewarded her with ONLY 90 VOTES.
