Presented in 2019 as Africa’s first fully integrated smartphone manufacturing plant, led by Ashish Thakkar and inaugurated by @PaulKagame , the initiative was promoted as a breakthrough in African technological independence. In practice, the project relied initially on rebranded devices sourced from General Mobile, rather than full local production. Despite claims of large-scale manufacturing, global exports, and job creation, evidence suggests that operations were limited, demand was partly driven by state influence, and sustainability was weak. I am shocked by the news of the abduction of my friend and comrade @Mukosearnanth Mukose Arnold Anthony of @AlternativeUga Alternative Digitalk who was abducted today at Metro FM 90.8 on Martin Road in Old Kampala. He was abducted just after a discussion of the recent nullification of the Computer Use (Amended) Act, being one of the petitioners of the Constitutional Court which nullified the law. I condemn the abduction of journalists in Uganda. Journalism is not a crime!
