Just saw a Ryan Gosling interview where he says he liked the story of Project Hail Mary because it has the message that the future isn't something to be feared, it's something to be figured out. And that's a message he wants his kids to hear. Awesome.

Kids did you know that before the internet, it was highly unusual to see a real person die on video? They used to have urban legends about it, they called them "snuff films." Now we get autoplay videos of exploded soldiers & bloody mass shooting victims beamed right to our pocket

@NickyFrank30 Nah, Harris had more money and started with a substantial polling lead but frittered it away on constant unforced errors I constantly think about how Kamala Harris got fewer delegates in the 2020 primary than Tulsi Gabbard. She's just not a great candidate

Imma be real with you. If Biden had dropped out in June 2023 an Democrats had a spirited competitive primary Trump still would’ve won. The die was cast the moment inflation got to 9 percent and border crossings exceeded a quarter of a million people per month.

Project Hail Mary spin-off that’s not hopeful or optimistic at all and examines the danger and weapons applications of astrophage on a dying and tense Earth…

There is a valuable lesson to be learned here— people with very little sense of personal identity end up stuck in effeminate, conduct-restrictive pseudo-hierarchies, forced inside under LED lights to play pretend everyday while people who refuse to sacrifice authenticity for status in these systems are allowed outside in the sunlight. Women and eunuchs see the latter as “dangerous”

There is a valuable lesson to be learned here— people with very little impulse control end up limited to a certain subset of jobs while people who can learn to understand social norms of their environment & have self control can advance further. Children see this as “being fake”

@SonnyBunch It’s delightful. Even the stressful parts are like “I’m pretty sure this will work out!” Which is an optimism we can use. I wish they’d finished the Han Solo movie.

Every negative critique of PROJECT HAIL MARY I’ve seen is basically “I resent this movie’s amiable tone.” Which strikes me as yet more proof it’ll have pretty solid legs, since most people don’t want to be made miserable.

@SonnyBunch That it will be popular I don't dispute anyway, but the goofy, ironic unseriousness (one of the worst parts of Marvelization) is still bad.

My one gripe about the Project Hail Mary movie was that they rushed the first scene and didn't spend enough time having Grace gradually discover that he was on a spacecraft in deep space.

@femaleweezerfan The nightlife is amazing. If you don’t leave your house why live in one of the most expensive metro areas in the country? You could get a palace a couple hours away for the same price

@trudygonzales Biden obviously had severe dementia and was incapable of public speaking. He was so addicted to power, even in a befuddled state, that he refused to allow a primary so that Dems could choose their strongest candidate.

WE should have never abandoned Joe Biden Biden had a competent government that served us He had 1 bad debate and some cowards in the Democratic party abandoned him Kamala Harris would have made a good president but the Nation needed Joe Biden
Don Winslow@donwinslow

@danprimack It’s a great film! The book is more about using clever thinking to solve complex engineering problems. Almost all of that drama is hand waived away in the movie.

When I learned they were going to make Project Hail Mary into a movie, I didn't really think it could be done -- or at least done well. I was wrong.

• be john wesley hyatt • a printer from albany, new york, 1863 • a billiard ball company is offering $10,000 to anyone who can replace ivory. elephants are being slaughtered by the thousands to supply america's pool halls • you soak cotton in nitric acid and add camphor • it works. you've just made the first synthetic plastic. you call it celluloid • you test the billiard balls • they explode. not every time. randomly. • a colorado saloon owner writes you a letter: every time two balls collide hard enough, every man in the room reaches for his gun. sounds like a gunshot • your factories keep burning down • you never collect the $10,000 • but to process the material at all, you had to invent something nobody had ever built: a machine that heats raw material until soft, then forces it into a mold under pressure • you file the patent in 1872 and think nothing of it • you move on. you invent a water purification system, a sugarcane mill, a roller bearing • you hire a 28-year-old draftsman named alfred sloan • you promote him to president, then sell the whole firm to general motors in 1916 • sloan goes on to run GM, invents the modern corporate org chart, and builds the management template every large company on earth still runs on • you die in 1920 having never collected your prize and not fully understanding what you built • the machine you invented to make combs and denture plates is now how the world makes M1 helmet liners, javelin missile housings, UAV fuselages, body armor backing plates, M16 stocks, IV syringes, car dashboards, lego bricks, and iPhone casings • 8 trillion parts per year. every one of them made by forcing hot material into a mold under pressure • the entire polymer layer of modern civilization -- consumer, medical, automotive, defense -- runs through one process • patented by a printer who was trying to win a contest he lost • absolute, relentless consequence from a single failed billiard ball

@25_cycle @TheBirdist No where did I say that I’m against building wildlife bridges but you assumed I did. You see that bc you’re so immersed in tribalism and blind party loyalty that you can’t understand criticizing lack of state capacity. Get your eyes checked

@sporadica The weather sucks. There are no great universities. People care more about being hot than being smart. There's no capital. There's no existing expertise.
