When she was 22, Rachel Hoffman, a Florida resident, was pulled over by Tallahassee police officers in February 2007 for a routine traffic stop. During the stop, the officers discovered 25 grams of marijuana in her possession. A subsequent search of her apartment uncovered additional illicit substances. Facing the possibility of a four-year prison sentence, Rachel was offered an alternative by the officers: she could avoid charges by working as an informant in a sting operation. Rachel agreed to the arrangement and was instructed to purchase 1,500 pills, 56 grams of cocaine, and two handguns. However, the dealers quickly grew suspicious of Rachel and discovered the wire she was wearing. Tragically, they shot and killed her with one of the handguns she was supposed to buy. The officers involved in the operation were suspended with pay, and Rachel's family filed a lawsuit against the city. The two dealers were charged and sentenced to life imprisonment.
