checking writings of Black Suffragists refs to 4th not on 4th "I hear the shrieks of the slave-mother, as her child is torn from her bosom and sold to the highest bidder. Amid your declamations about liberty, your Fourth of July speeches, ....." May 22 1858 Frances Harper

Did Mary Ann Shadd Cary have a 4th of July speech? Did Anna Julia Cooper or Frances Harper? By next July 4th, let’s have Black women’s speeches compiled, posted + ready to share. Send findings to #DigBlk! @CynthiaGreenlee @citeblackwomen @DarkStars__ @marthasjones_ @nhannahjones

Can we suggest a new Douglass speech for today? He saw through the hypocrisy of the Fourth of July, but he also saw the possibility for radical change. "There is a power in numbers, the many are more than the few." Watch "Why Hold a Colored Convention?" youtu.be/brhHmTaxqOs

A gay GI in March 1945 opening a letter to his friend Harold on how San Fran's gay scene made LA's look like Sunday School. 😆 Note the list of bars. Informal communication like this helped gays & lesbians find safe and welcoming bars & restaurants before travel guides or the web

If you use PowerPoint: The "Accessibility Checker" on PowerPoint is an amazing tool for making sure your materials are accessible to everyone. I actually didn't know about this tool before, so I wanted to pass along the info just in case. #Humbling #SoMuchtoStillLearn

On October 6, 1989, San Francisco police violent swept through the Castro district to end a peaceful ACT-UP protest. 53 people were arrested & 10 citizens were seriously injured. A protest t-shirt honoring the police riot is digitized on @WearingGayHist. #Pride #twitterstorians

Side note: One reason why it's super important to study LGBTQ histories on a local level is to see how different municipalities dealt with the rising visibility & clout of LGBTQ Americans in the 20th century. Los Angeles, despite it's ties to entertainment industry, was DREADFUL
