Our detectives worked swiftly alongside the FBI to help thwart a possible New Year’s Eve terror attack in North Carolina, reaching across state lines to prevent violence. Great work!
FBI Charlotte@FBICharlotte

The #FBI thwarted a potential terrorist attack on New Year's Eve in North Carolina. The subject was directly inspired to act by ISIS. A federal criminal complaint alleges 18-year-old Christian Sturdivant planned a violent attack at a grocery store in Mint Hill. SAC Barnacle praised the swift action of the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force, the @NYPDnews, @USAO_WDNC, @TheJusticeDept, and the Mint Hill Police Department to protect our community and Defend the Homeland. justice.gov/usao-wdnc/pr/f…

We don’t often hear about the tragedies that are prevented. Today we celebrate the NYPD detectives and all of our partners at the Joint Terrorism Task Force.  Their investigative efforts dismantled a 9/11-style terror plot and brought the perpetrator to justice.
FBI New York@NewYorkFBI

The FBI New York Joint Terrorism Task Force and @SDNYnews announced today that Cholo Abdi Abdullah was sentenced to life in prison for conspiring to provide, and providing, material support to a foreign terrorist organization, and conspiring to murder U.S. nationals, commit aircraft piracy, destroy aircraft, and commit transnational acts of terrorism. FBI New York Assistant Director in Charge Christopher Raia: "Al Qaeda affiliated terrorist and trained pilot Cholo Abdullah was justly punished today for his plotting to commit a 9/11-style terrorist attack. This case serves as reminder to individuals still wishing to inflict violence upon our country in the name of the terrorism. The FBI New York Joint Terrorism Task Force remains steadfast in its relentless determination to protect the American people from terrorists and their heinous desires." Pictures from Abdullah at a flight school and from his extradition to the United States to face justice are below. Read more at: ow.ly/8klr50XNsrY

As Jews across New York City welcome the first night of Hanukkah, we want to wish everyone a wonderful holiday. The story of Hanukkah is an important reminder of the power of light over darkness, and that message is especially significant today. While there is currently no specific or credible threat to Hanukkah celebrations here, the NYPD will be out in full force at events and synagogues so that our communities can gather safely. As always, if you see something, say something. Call 888-NYC-SAFE

We are closely monitoring the horrific attack at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia during a Hannukah celebration. We are in touch with our Australian partners, and at this time we see no nexus to NYC. We are deploying additional resources to public Hanukkah celebrations and synagogues out of an abundance of caution. As always, if you see something, say something.

Earlier this week, the NYPD hosted a promotion ceremony where we recognized members of the department who have shown the kind of judgment and steadiness this job requires. The NYPD is built on people who show up in all conditions and move us forward with consistency. A promotion reflects the trust placed in those individuals to guide others, set expectations, and shape how the work is done. And the truest measure of rank is not how many stand beneath someone, but how many rise because of them. Congratulations to everyone who was promoted this week, and thank you for all you do to keep our city safe.

On Veterans Day, we honor all those who have worn our nation’s uniform — including more than 3,100 active members of the NYPD who answered two calls to serve. Nearly 700 of these officers are currently deployed with military units across America and abroad, upholding their oath to defend our country. And when they return home, they will continue their sworn duty to safeguard our city. Two distinct uniforms, worn with one noble purpose: to protect others. To all our veterans, and especially the members of this department who pull double-duty: Thank you for your service. We are forever indebted to you, and we are proud to honor you today.   Happy Veterans Day!
