Mosey on back to the 40s and 50s this August, as we add four new Limited Edition Blu-rays to the Imprint Collection, including two worldwide firsts! ✨ John Huston’s WE WERE STRANGERS (1949) debuts on Blu-ray, the historical thriller that takes us deep into the Cuban underground and into the heart of a revolution. Controversial upon release, the film (for which Huston established his own company to finance) was a bold answer to the anti-Communist witch hunts that then gripped Hollywood. The great Broadway melodrama LADIES IN RETIREMENT (1941) also comes to Blu-ray for the first time worldwide, which saw Academy Award nominations for Best Art Direction and Best Original Score. Centring an actress’s housekeeper named Ellen, the tensions escalate as her eccentric sisters come to visit, culminating in a murder. Starring James Edwards in a landmark leading performance, HOME OF THE BRAVE (1949) was one of Hollywood’s first films to confront racism head-on. Shot in secrecy in just 30 days, the film, set during WWII, follows a reconnaissance platoon sent to map a Japanese-held island. Racial tensions arise between the white soldiers and the only black member of the group. Marlon Brando made his stellar feature film debut with THE MEN (1950), the powerful drama from Academy Award-winning director Fred Zinnemann (High Noon). Left paralysed from the waist down in the final days of WWII, a young infantry lieutenant becomes withdrawn until a straight-talking doctor and fellow patients begin the long process of pulling him back.
