After more than a decade of fear and trauma across parts of the Free State, police have scored a major breakthrough against a violent syndicate linked to a string of serious crimes in the Lejweleputswa District. The SAPS Free State Provincial Serial Electronic Crime Investigation (SECI) Unit, working together with the Bultfontein Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit, has successfully secured convictions against key members believed to be behind a wave of terror in Virginia, Welkom and Odendaalsrus. For years, residents in these communities lived under the threat of violent house robberies, housebreaking, attempted murder and rape incidents allegedly carried out by the group between 2011 and 2019. The breakthrough is being credited to the meticulous investigation led by Sergeant Mosiuwa Ntholeng of the SECI Unit and Sergeant Jack Salemane of the FCS Unit. Their investigation first led to the conviction of alleged syndicate mastermind Richard Bongani Mazibuko, who was sentenced in 2025 on 12 counts of rape. DNA evidence collected from multiple crime scenes played a crucial role in linking him to several victims and robbery cases. Police later identified a second suspect, 42-year-old Finane Thulo, who was traced to Butterworth Prison in the Eastern Cape where he was already behind bars for unrelated armed robbery offences. Through further investigation, including an identity parade and analysis of the syndicate’s modus operandi, investigators linked Thulo to at least six incidents of housebreaking and robbery committed across the Free State over an eight-year period. Thulo appeared before the Virginia Regional Court where he was found guilty. Working closely with Prosecutor Labuschagne, the State secured a 38-year prison sentence, with the accused expected to serve an effective 10 years imprisonment. Police say the convictions mark an important victory for justice and for victims who have waited years for answers. However, SAPS confirmed that the investigation is far from over, with several other suspects linked to the syndicate still being pursued. The SAPS has urged members of the public who may have information about the remaining suspects to contact their nearest police station, call Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or use the MySAPSApp anonymously. Authorities say they remain committed to dismantling the entire criminal network and ensuring every suspect linked to the crimes is brought before court.
