@AmiDar I think the cost is far greater. Decades of aid fueled wars and occupation, then also trillions in military entanglements in the region (fought primarily for Israel), then the immense diplomatic damage at the UN and world. The $10 per person is a tiny fraction of the true burden.

@Alonso_GD South America’s “liberators” were Creole bourgeois elites. They replaced a distant Crown with republics that stripped Indigenous communities of land and protections. For many, independence meant harsher rule under local masters.

This is currently the world’s largest neutrino detector. Deep underground in Jiangmen, China, one of JUNO’s main goals is to determine the outstanding mystery of how heavy each flavor of neutrino is. quantamagazine.org/how-physicists…

@ShanuMathew93 *When you extend with super optimistic future estimates* - It’s not a given the planned datacenters will be built and connected. It’s also not assured people will pay for these models when open source models that run locally do 90% as well as the paying ones.

Reminder that when you say something is ‘fascinating’ you are actually saying you have been enchanted by this guy – Fascinus, the embodiment of the divine phallus. ‘Fascinate’ derives from the Latin verb ‘fascinare’, meaning to bewitch through the magical power of the fascinus.

@mamboitaliano__ Spain suffers so much from this idiocy of tourists that it has a name: “balconing”. Every year a couple idiots die doing this in Mallorca and other places.

🚨 American influencer Josh Pumb from Salt Lake City dives off a balcony at the lovely Hotel Villa Flori on Lake Como, calling it an epic stunt But Italians are furious 🇮🇹 Over the danger, potential rescues, and the bad example it sets No wonder Italy is cracking down with strict new rules for bold tourist behavior at lakes, mountains, and beaches

Funniest thing about the Central Europe heat wave fuss is that, all of a sudden, the Spanish siesta, closing stores mid-day, and dinner at 10 PM doesn’t sound so lazy Southerners. We had 35 degrees for centuries before AC existed. Welcome to our life. You will get better at it.

The Rhind Mathematical Papyrus is the oldest manuscript written in algebra and trigonometry, dating back to 3,550 years ago. It shows that the Egyptians used first-order equations, geometric series and a second-order algebraic equation, related to the Pythagorean theorem a² + b² = c² It also describes how to obtain an approximation of π accurate to within less than 1% and one of the earliest attempts at squaring the circle.

@Sarah404BC Reading Herodotus’s The Histories, he explains that during Cyrus’s siege of the city of Sardis against its king Croesus, there was a heavily fortified structure on top of a very vertical hilltop. Is that true? Can this be seen in the excavated site?

@nntaleb @DouadyPrimers I didn’t know the set was topologically connected, fascinating. But I read the question as being about the image: a black pixel only means “not escaped after N iterations.” For the true set, a pixel covers an area, so the answer is resolution-dependent.

This is v. interesting because Adrien Douady, Raphael's father, @DouadyPrimers , proved that the points are topologically connected, counter to Mandelbrot's supposition that there were "islands".

#math problem 19-06-2026 Fractal necessity. The black points in this image are often said to be "the Mandelbrot set." ℳ = { c ∈ ℂ : |zₙ| < 2 for all n ≥ 0, where z₀ = 0 and zₙ₊₁ = zₙ² + c } Are all black pixels necessarily points of ℳ?
