@richardtgarland The "politicisation" of the Irish language began long before SF. It began with state policies to marginalise its use, disadvantage its speakers and force Irish people to learn and use English.

Seems clear that SF couldn’t care less about the Irish language when they are prepared to politicise and undermine it in the manner that they are. They are out to get a reaction and if the language suffers it will be mere collateral damage in the wider Republican “struggle”.

I fully agree that Burke is in prison for violating a court order. However, I think it’s important to acknowledge the root of the case. The court order arose because Burke refused to comply with his suspension. The suspension was the direct result of Burke’s objection, and his manner of objection, to compelled use of they/them pronouns for a singular male student.
Shaykh Dr. Umar Al-Qadri@DrUmarAlQadri

Enoch Burke is in prison for violating a court order to stay away from the school grounds, not for refusing to use “they/them” pronouns. He is not a religious hero. The lack of support from the Churches should make that clear. Don’t let bias prevent you from recognising facts.

@Timeo764471 @Glinner @EnochBurke The High Court placed major weight on Burke’s conduct, not just his beliefs. In particular hus disruptive behaviour, including confronting the principal publicly. The court emphasized that he was not dismissed for holding beliefs, the issue was his conduct.

@ofaolainC @Glinner @EnochBurke 2...they/them pronouns, plus non acceptance of transgenderism, Judge faherty called this instruction the 'kernel of the case',and the schools overreaching complaint, the report itself centered on non compliance with PRONOUN DIRECTIVE.

@RealIrishCONS People descended from Norse/Normans/English etc are not Irish regardless of their citizenship? That's a radical racial ideology that I doubt many Irish people would have any time for.

@mjc0ughl4n @CogitoScio @MulhallOdyssey @DanMulhall What better way's would these be? Choosing to make Irish an optional subject, despite the lack of support for such a move, would be a clear signal that Irish is being deprioritised by the state and it would almost certainly see people discouraged to study and use it.

@ofaolainC @CogitoScio @MulhallOdyssey @DanMulhall Optionality doesn’t predetermine the State’s stance. What follows is what matters, and Ireland has plenty of tools to support a subject when it chooses to. There are better ways the state can support Irish than forcing it on kids who struggle with it.

I think it might have to do with the name of our country & a legitimate desire to preserve our national language, which is part of what makes us Irish.
Tom Doorley@tomdoorley

Make Irish optional for Leaving Cert. Why do universities (other than @tcddublin) insist on Irish, English and Maths? English, I get. Maths, maybe. But Irish? Opinion: Ireland’s ‘power class’ has a colonial attitude to the Irish language irishtimes.com/opinion/2026/0…

@ofaolainC @CogitoScio @MulhallOdyssey @DanMulhall Not necessarily. England’s outcome wasn’t caused by optionality alone. It was caused by the State stepping back. Ireland already props up small LC subjects through allocation rules and funding. When Irish is also optional, the real variable won't be demand but political will.

@ofaolainC @CogitoScio @MulhallOdyssey @DanMulhall It would likely lead to a drop in teaching hours. But, given the status of Irish, the state could justifiably intervene to protect teaching hours. Much smaller optional subjects like Music and Physics survive in smaller schools through the state quietly propping them up.

@mjc0ughl4n @CogitoScio @MulhallOdyssey @DanMulhall There would be a significant reduction in the number of teaching positions, and a knockon impact at third level etc. Making learning a second language optional in England, for much the same reason as you are suggesting here, was a terrible decision.

@CogitoScio @MulhallOdyssey @DanMulhall History isn't compulsory at Leaving Cert and yet we still have history teachers. Geography isn't compulsory and we still have geography teachers. I'm not suggesting we remove Irish from the curriculum. I'm saying we should make it optional in fifth and sixth year.

@mjc0ughl4n @DanMulhall That's rather simplistic. We have some useful comparisons available over in the UK. Welsh is doing much better where significantly more robust policies have been implemented in Wales, while Scottish Gaelic is in a much worse position where much weaker policies were implemented.

@supercron @DrClaytonForre1 Nah. We don't have people regularly going bankrupt due to illness, we don't have school shootings, we don't have people crippled for life with student loans, we don't have for-profit prisons, we don't have a pedophile as President, and we don't need advice from racist Yanks.

@mjc0ughl4n @Dengs333 @DVATW @DavidTheCaver The visit was a personal call to the ambassador, who behaved quite well in his dealings with the Irish government throughout. I think the main purpose of the visit was to reassure the ambassador he would not be arrested and extradited despite the demands of some allied diplomats.

@Dengs333 @DVATW @DavidTheCaver And nowhere in that article does it say that Ireland opened a book of condolences upon the death of Hitler. The visit of De Valera to the German Minister is well known, but there were no books of condolences.
