My own Canadian cultural shock happened on September 4th, 2023. Labour Day 😭🇨🇦 My husband and I had just arrived in Canada and were staying with family friends in Bowmanville. Within two weeks, we found an apartment, paid for everything, and felt very accomplished. Our first mistake? Choosing Labour Day as our official move-in date. We happily packed our things, moved into the empty apartment, looked around proudly like responsible adults starting a new life abroad… then decided to quickly go buy a mattress. That was when Canada humbled us. Every single store was closed 😭 Not “closing soon.” Not “limited hours.” Closed. Shut down. Lights off. Ghost town. That was the day I truly understood that Canadians take holidays seriously. Meanwhile, my body was already aching from moving boxes up and down. We had no mattress, no proper chair, nothing. Just vibes and happiness of starting a new life in Canada. I ended up sleeping on the bare floor that night like someone in a survival documentary. By the next morning, I was extremely cranky because I barely slept. Tell me why this man beside me woke up refreshed and stretching like he had slept inside a luxury hotel suite. Oga slept peacefully on hard floor while I was there calculating all the life decisions that brought me to Canada.

My first Canada 🇨🇦 Day, I walked to a store to grab something. The door was locked. I stood there confused. In Naija 🇳🇬 holidays are when malls are most alive. Shoprite dey full like Argungu fishing festival. That is about to change. Starting tomorrow, Doug Ford’s new rules let Ontario retail stores open on Family Day and Victoria Day for the first time. Companies decide. Workers who clock in get time-and-a-half plus full holiday pay. Some are happy about the extra money. Many are not. Those were two of the few protected days retail workers actually had. Your boss can now call you in for a “voluntary” shift on what used to be a guaranteed day off. My naija people what do you think of this?

You didn’t relocate, you just changed currency. 🇨🇦 Ottawa = 🇳🇬 Abuja. Government jobs. Quiet life. People leave work at 5pm. Still can’t believe that’s legal. 🇨🇦 Vancouver = 🇳🇬 Port Harcourt. Beautiful. By the water. Everything is expensive and nobody is sorry about it. 🇨🇦 Calgary = 🇳🇬 Warri. Oil and gas. Tough people. No time for packaging. What you see is what you get. 🇨🇦 Brampton = 🇳🇬 Festac/Surulere. Every Nigerian knows someone there. The jollof, the churches, the hair salons. You will think you never left. 🇨🇦 Winnipeg = 🇳🇬 Kaduna. Overlooked. Affordable. Getting better quietly. Nobody talks about it enough. 🇨🇦 Montreal = 🇳🇬 Ibadan. Old soul. Rich culture. Speaks a different language and is very proud of that. You will adapt or struggle. 🇨🇦 Edmonton = 🇳🇬 Enugu. Solid. Underestimated. People work hard and say nothing about it. Which one did I get right and which one did I miss? 👇

No one should cheat on the other, both have taken fidelity vows in marriage, I don't support cheating. But no one should think that they will get away with that behaviour and assume messiah role to decide what the other will do. You have to notify the govt of such glorious celebrations if you wish they recognize you. If not, stop lamenting!!! No one goes to celebration he wasn’t invited
