@JustWanaBS I think most people like to pick at least one big upset. The Canes is the easiest this year. Kings, Mammoth, Ducks, and Bruins are easy picks to be swept and the other series are toss ups so Senators is the obvious bold, daring prediction. (And the Sens definitely have a chance.)

Just about what you’d expect.
Surprisingly Steve is the only one to take the canes but, I think that’s because he was sort of surprised after reading the stats sheet for the canes that they have so much scoring depth.

@ByMHarrington Sweet summer child, the owners are the ones who want the current format. The also appreciate Gary taking the heat. Yeah, coaches who have career stats want anything that improves their odds of getting a few more wins but the owners want the TV ratings.

Maybe the loser of Tampa Bay-Montreal and Dallas-Minnesota can finally put pressure on the commish about how dumb this all is. And I'm not talking coaches. This should come from ownership-GM level. And we know Bill Guerin in Minny is already simmering.

@matt_lozar @ByMHarrington In 38 1v8 series the #8 won 8 times, the #7 won 18 times, and the #6 won 15 times. There were only 6 Conf Finals that were 1v2 and only 1 Stanley Cup was 1st vs 1st.
The logical conclusion of your desire to only see the best is actually to eliminate the first round completely.

Carolina won the East and has a tougher matchup than Pittsburgh does. This system is just plain dumb and the only person who likes it is Gary Bettman.
The whole world wants 1-8, 2-7, 3-6, 4-5.
And Gary needs to realize that would still be a GREAT first round too.

@dale_l_sheehan Making the playoffs is the reward. Having home ice against teams with fewer points is the reward. Out of 38 1v8 series in the supposed golden era there were 8 1st seeds, 18 2nd seeds, and 15 3rd seeds upset in the first round. The Pacific is historically bad this year. So what?

At the end of the second round NHL playoffs 2 out of the top 3 teams in the western conference will be eliminated. I don’t know any other professional sports league that sets its playoffs up in such a manner with very little reward for regular season performance 🏒

Only in the NHL is the 7th or the 8th seed guaranteed to get to the second round and either the 3rd or 4th seed will be eliminated.

@EricMacramalla If you think that's bad, did you know that by the Stanley Cup Finals at least 6 of the 8 best teams will be eliminated?
During 1v8 18 #7 seeds and 15 #6 seeds won out of 38 each. Playing while rested and healthy instead of a ~50% chance of both making it to the second is fine.

The NHL's playoff seeding format will result in one of the best three teams in the West gone after Round 1, and two of the top three teams gone after the second (Avs/Stars/Wild).
This is not defensible. Go with 1-8, etc. Guerin is right.

@theblockspot We have been hoodwinked, bamboozled, and led astray! The absolute injustice that the Hurricanes don't get a first round against the Penguins who had 98 pts this season and instead must play the Senators... who had 99 points.

TBL vs. PIT
MTL vs. BOS
