MBC team has found that anti-progestin therapy could help prevent breast cancer before menopause. Published today in Nature, the study suggests this could be a new way to stop breast cancer before it starts. doi.org/10.1038/s41586…

A drug already used on the NHS could one day help prevent breast cancer in women before the menopause who have a family history of breast cancer. In a small study, researchers found it reduced early changes in breast tissue linked to cancer developing. brnw.ch/21wXeFU

Congratulations to our star MRC student @ollie cottrell who defended his PhD thesis on harnessing gene expression oscillations to prevent dormant cancer cells from reactivating. Exciting work that lays the foundation for new ways to prevent relapse.

@RestIsPolitics @RoryStewartUK @campbellclaret Would you be intersted in discussing Bulgarian elections next week (7th since 2021)? Catastrophic breakdown in functional democracy. Broken proportional representation. Lots of Russian influence. What happens when a country wants to be democratic and just can't seem to manage it?

@ChrisMartzWX Using the top 28 + Milton 6 in the last 7 years = 0.86 strong hurricanes/yr (1 every 1.2 yrs) 23 between 1851-2016 = 0.13 strong hurricanes/year (1 every 7.7 yrs) It’s a short observation period for now but in line with other trends outside FL, across the globe - worrying. No?

YOUR CAPS LOCK IS ON. 🔒 Here are some Florida hurricane facts for you. 📚 ➊ Seven of the top 10 strongest hurricanes [by their central mean sea-level pressure, or MSLP] to make landfall in Florida occurred over 30-years ago. Six of those struck either in or before 1960. Three of the top five hit prior to 1940, including the most intense, which was “Labor Day” (1935) at 892 hPa. Here's a link to the data for that, 🫳 🔗aoml.noaa.gov/hrd/hurdat/All… ➋ Florida has been directly hit by 111 hurricanes since 1851, including 40 major hurricanes. Three hurricanes have struck this year alone, but that also occurred in 1871, 1886, 1964, 2004 and 2005. Between Hurricane Wilma (2005) and Hurricane Hermine (2016), Florida went 10-years, 10-months and 15-days without even a single hurricane strike, the longest stretch on record since 1851. ➌ Florida was struck by twelve hurricanes during the 1870s alone, followed by ten each in the 1880 and in the 1940s. How'd that happen? ➍ This isn't the first time that Florida has been struck by two major hurricanes within a short period of time. In 1950, Hurricane Easy (C3) and Hurricane King (C4) struck six weeks apart. And, 20-years ago in 2004, a total of three hurricanes struck within a period of six weeks, including two majors. They were Hurricane Charley (C4), Frances (C2) and Jeanne (C3), the latter two of which struck three weeks apart. Here are the links to those maps, 🫳 🔗#map=4.11/31.46/-78.4&search=eyJzZWFyY2hTdHJpbmciOiJOb3J0aCBBdGxhbnRpYyBPY2VhbiBCYXNpbiIsInNlYXJjaFR5cGUiOiJiYXNpbiIsImNhdGVnb3JpZXMiOlsiSDUiLCJINCIsIkgzIiwiSDIiLCJIMSJdLCJ5ZWFycyI6WyIxOTUwIl0sIm1vbnRocyI6W10sImVuc28iOltdLCJwcmVzc3VyZSI6eyJyYW5nZSI6WzAsMTAzMF0sImluY2x1ZGVVbmtub3duUHJlc3N1cmUiOnRydWV9LCJidWZmZXJVbml0IjpbIk1pbGVzIl0sInNvcnRTZWxlY3Rpb24iOnsidmFsdWUiOiJ5ZWFyc19uZXdlc3QiLCJsYWJlbCI6IlllYXIgKE5ld2VzdCkifSwiYXBwbHlUb0FPSSI6ZmFsc2UsImlzU3Rvcm1MYWJlbHNWaXNpYmxlIjp0cnVlfQ==" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">coast.noaa.gov/hurricanes/#ma… 🔗#map=4.11/31.46/-78.4&search=eyJzZWFyY2hTdHJpbmciOiJOb3J0aCBBdGxhbnRpYyBPY2VhbiBCYXNpbiIsInNlYXJjaFR5cGUiOiJiYXNpbiIsImNhdGVnb3JpZXMiOlsiSDUiLCJINCIsIkgzIiwiSDIiLCJIMSJdLCJ5ZWFycyI6WyIyMDA0Il0sIm1vbnRocyI6W10sImVuc28iOltdLCJwcmVzc3VyZSI6eyJyYW5nZSI6WzAsMTAzMF0sImluY2x1ZGVVbmtub3duUHJlc3N1cmUiOnRydWV9LCJidWZmZXJVbml0IjpbIk1pbGVzIl0sInNvcnRTZWxlY3Rpb24iOnsidmFsdWUiOiJ5ZWFyc19uZXdlc3QiLCJsYWJlbCI6IlllYXIgKE5ld2VzdCkifSwiYXBwbHlUb0FPSSI6ZmFsc2UsImlzU3Rvcm1MYWJlbHNWaXNpYmxlIjp0cnVlfQ==" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">coast.noaa.gov/hurricanes/#ma… Hurricanes are more catastrophic because there is a much larger waterfront population today than there was a century, or heck, even 40-years ago.

Governor @RonDeSantis shot down a news reporter today who tried to get him to blame Hurricane Milton on climate change. He didn’t evade it either — he directly answered the question and cited stats to debunk the claim. Oh, and those stats Governor DeSantis cited? They were directly from my analysis of NOAA HURDAT2 data this morning. Trump and Vance should take a page out of his book and sack reporters with data and leave them speechless.

@JohnOBrennan2 Though, now we’re here, not sure we should be over-politicising or otherwise criticising a simple show of connection to local fans. Dislike both Novak’s views and Bulgarian division/nationalism. But he’s just singing a nice song at a charity match. No?

Had a great time in Germany @embl for #EESBioOsc - hearing about all things oscillations across a dizzying range of scales and contexts. Enjoyed giving a talk on my PhD work with @PapalopuluLab @RobClarkeLab on Hes1 oscillations in breast cancer.
