🇿🇦"Journalist & political analyst" Tafi Mhaka writes... In 1870, African farmers in Natal and the Highveld expanded cultivation with ox-drawn ploughs and wagons, but Boer farmers remained largely pastoral. In the Richmond district, African kraals produced up to 500 bags of mealies. On the Highveld, Boer farmers depended on the Basotho for maize and wheat. By 1875, white settlers were leaving Natal for the Orange Free State, unable to produce enough food or compete with African farmers who sold produce at lower prices. White settlers soon complained that Africans were becoming richer than whites. Across Lydenburg, Zoutpansberg and the Caledon River Valley in South Africa, settlers described African economic advance as “indringing” and “oorheersing” — infiltration and domination over white society. In 1893, 111 burghers from the Vereeniging Estates petitioned the Volksraad to ban sharecropping and restrict African success. Many Boers were both lazy and incompetent. They refused field labour, failed to adapt to commercial agriculture, and fell into impoverishment. Africans, the land’s owners, were diligent, skilled and highly productive farmers.
