ON Nuclear Advantage

At @ontnuclear’s #CNA2026, I thanked the leaders behind Ontario’s nuclear advantage who are helping build a national consensus on nuclear power. We created the conditions by demonstrating #OnTimeOnBudget discipline and by keeping over 90% of investment #MadeInCanada. Now, we’re setting the stage for generational investments that will define Canada’s future prosperity.

Last week, we lowered the close to 2,100,000-pound Basemat into place — the foundation for the G7's first Small Modular Reactor and Canada's first new nuclear build in more than 30 years. One of the largest crawler cranes in the world lowered the Basemat module into the reactor shaft at the Darlington New Nuclear Project site — 35 metres below ground. It’s the first time in Canada a foundation for a reactor building was assembled modularly – putting the “M” in SMR – as the giant component was fabricated, welded, and put together in one piece before being lifted into place. This was a milestone months in the making, requiring significant attention to detail and safety, as well as the hard work of dedicated trades and project partners. Ontario just executed the first foundation of a new nuclear reactor in Canada in over 30 years. Once complete, the facility will: • Train ~50 new apprentices annually • Deliver 1,000+ safety certifications each year • Serve as a regional hub across Huron, Perth, Bruce, and Grey counties By bringing training closer to home, this centre will strengthen access to skilled trades and support a locally trained workforce ready to meet growing energy needs. With approximately 450 @LiUNA1059 members already supporting Bruce Power projects, this investment reinforces a simple truth: Ontario’s clean energy future depends on highly trained, local talent.

A great day visiting the @liuna183 Tunnel Rescue and Skills Training Centre with @opg and @VINCI Construction to see the training behind the Pickering Nuclear Tunnel Project. The level of preparation, safety focus, and hands-on skill development was incredibly impressive. This is what Ontario’s Nuclear Advantage looks like in action: highly trained skilled trades workers building the critical infrastructure that will support our province’s energy future.

We're marking an important step toward the launch of our SMR project's massive tunnel boring machine – nicknamed Harriet Brooks, after Canada's first female nuclear physicist. Earlier this month, the thrust frame – a steel structure that allows the machine to push through solid rock – was tested successfully. With thrust frame testing now complete, we're one step closer to the big borer starting its drive later this summer, when it will begin digging a 3.4-kilometre-long tunnel that will deliver cooling water for all four of our planned SMRs at the Darlington site. It's yet another milestone delivered on one of the most complex clean energy projects in Canada.
