Would be much easier to just immediately interpret everything through a pre-developed lens but those who truly know and have access to those in the know understand well that things are rarely cut and dry.

1 thing remains true - as far journalists go Chris is 1 of few who since 2022 sticks to reporting facts & if he does have a personal view he doesn’t let it show.
As a scholar I too fight for empirics & balanced analyses. Harder than ever when most default to affect & tribalism.

Olha Stefanishyna, @StefanishynaO, has resigned from her post as Ukraine’s ambassador to the US. Her statement: “Today I have decided to resign as Ambassador of Ukraine to the United States of America. This is my own decision, dictated by the personal circumstances discussed earlier. Representing Ukraine in Washington at a time when it is waging a war for its existence has been the greatest honor in my life. As it was an honor to open Ukraine’s path to the European Union as Vice Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration, to promote reforms in the justice sector as Minister of Justice. I am grateful to the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, for this trust and this opportunity. I count on his understanding and support for this decision. It is important for me to make such decisions independently, especially since the main points of the plan I came with have been implemented. I will highlight three things. We increased the supply of American weapons and maintained support precisely when the political environment in Washington was changing not in our favor. We have enshrined this support in laws that will survive any change of administration. And, most importantly, we have changed the very role of Ukraine: from a country that is helped to a country that is invested in and whose technologies are purchased. What the team has done is inscribed in the laws and in the very relations between our states, and therefore does not depend on who holds the position - the only thing left is to work on further strengthening our positions. Regarding the questions that have been heard in the media recently. I will comment on them separately and publicly in the near future. Thank you to the team of the Embassy, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and everyone with whom we have worked side by side these years. Thank you also to those who have been following me more closely than their own affairs all these months: healthy distrust of the authorities makes both the authorities and the country stronger. I will continue to work for Ukraine and our victory where I can be useful. Glory to Ukraine!”

Last weekend, together with fellow Ukrainian ambassadors, I visited the village of Yahidne in the Chernihiv region.
It is difficult to find words for what happened here in March 2022. Russian troops forced 368 civilians—including 69 children and elderly people—into the basement of the local school, where they were held for 27 days in unimaginable conditions.
With almost no space, little food or water, and barely any fresh air, people were forced to sleep sitting up. Ten civilians died in the basement. Others were executed during the occupation.
We met some of the survivors. They shared their stories with remarkable courage and dignity. Listening to them inside the very basement where they had been imprisoned was a profoundly moving experience. It is impossible to stand in that place and not feel the weight of what they endured.
Yahidne is a stark reminder of why this war is not about territory. It is about people. It is about the deliberate terror inflicted on civilians. And it is about ensuring that those responsible for these atrocities are held accountable.
As Ukraine continues its fight for freedom, we must continue to tell these stories. The world must not forget what happened in Yahidne—or in Bucha, Izium, Mariupol, and so many other Ukrainian communities that suffered and continue suffering under Russian occupation.
Memory is a form of justice. Accountability is the path to lasting peace.

Weapons for Ukraine – now. The quality of an embassy’s work must be measured by the amount of weapons Ukraine receives, the funding that supports Ukraine, and the political decisions and concrete steps that put pressure on Russia. That is the clear framework.
A Ukrainian ambassador must know how many air defense missiles are available in the country where they serve – and how to ensure that those missiles are not sitting in stockpiles somewhere, but loaded into our launchers here in Ukraine. Missiles for Patriots, NASAMS, IRIS-Ts, SAMP/Ts, and Hawks; weapons for our combat aircraft; everything our drones need – this is your daily work and ours.
Every ambassador must bring weapons to Ukraine. Some of you may be more public, while others may be less so. It depends on the country where you serve and the specific task. Some may work through official channels, while in other places only informal channels are effective. In some cases, support from civil society and the media is indispensable; elsewhere, unnecessary public moves only get in the way. But you must bring in weapons and assist everyone who does.
The KPIs for our embassies and ambassadors must be restructured accordingly. Weapons are needed. Missiles are needed. Funding for Ukraine is needed.

This time, the meeting of Ukrainian ambassadors began with a trip to my native front-line Chernihiv Oblast.
This region, which we defended from the first hours of the full-scale invasion and which survived a difficult occupation, remains Ukraine's northern outpost on the border with Russia and Belarus. Grateful for the opportunity to meet those who protect and restore life here during these difficult times.
We continue our work in the capital. Priorities: work on establishing peace and Ukraine's leadership. I repeat once again – the real guarantees of security for our country are the development of defense capabilities in the realities of high-tech warfare and the new world order. As well as effective security alliances.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy's personnel shuffle continues. Rustem Umerov is appointed head of the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine. Replacing him as secretary of the National Security and Defense Council is Ihor Klymenko, the former interior minister. The corresponding presidential decrees were published this afternoon.
Umerov is expected to continue working with Zelenskyy's team of peace negotiators.

Not even Article 4, for a cruise missile landing on NATO territory?
Such a non-reaction would have been unimaginable before the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. There would have been strong measures immediately taken.
But, over time, outrages have been normalised and even rationalised to the point where they are no longer considered outrageous.
So I have to ask — what other aggressions would also be greeted with a shrug? Destroying critical infrastructure? Killing people? How many?
The promise to defend every inch has now been broken, so how many more inches are we going to let go?

🇺🇦 Fedorov said he would not join the political opposition to Zelensky during the war and would not meet with demonstrators demanding his return to office.
He also said he wanted protesters at the protests to focus not on his position, but on the strategy of waging war.

For the first time ever, Ukraine is joining the 🇪🇺 Civil Protection Mechanism as a provider of assistance.
A 70-member Ukrainian firefighting team is on its way to France to help battle the wildfires.
While defending itself against Russia's war of aggression, Ukraine is also helping protect lives across Europe.
This is European solidarity.

In the suburbs of Kryvyi Rih, a Russian missile hit a home housing a family with 10 children. Dnipro Regional Administration reported that, the attack killed both parents and 7 of their children🕯💔 In a single strike, Russia killed: - Mark, 17 - Dominika, 15 - Viorika, 14 - Zakharia, 12 - Azariy Ilay, 11 - Federico, 10 - 6-year-old Emilia - And 1.5-year-old grandson Artem, the child of their eldest son, who is currently serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. I just... I have no words.

In the strike on Radushne, for the first time in a while, the Russians used a North Korean missile, according to preliminary data. Of course, more examinations will follow, and everything will be verified, but as of now – it is a North Korean ballistic missile. The alliance between the Moscow scumbags and the deranged regime in North Korea exists for the sake of missiles, North Korean troops on our borders here in Europe, and killing our Ukrainian children.
Of course, many around the world condemned this strike today. There were many expressions of sympathy over the loss of life. European countries also made many statements because a Russian missile flew into Polish territory and exploded somewhere in a field near Lublin. What matters most, however, is not mere sympathy and condemnation, but air defense missiles and pressure on Russia that can stop this dumb Russian war. Air defense missiles – for Patriots in the first place, but also for NASAMS, IRIS-T, HAWK, and our other systems – are the key priority.
I hope that all of our partners – above all our American partners, as well as our friends in Europe – will feel that real human lives depend on whether they help us.

I am horrified by the scenes in Ukraine after overnight Russian strikes killed at least 8 people, including children. My thoughts are with the victims' families and the whole of Ukraine. The UK also stands with Poland and Romania after multiple violations of NATO airspace.

Andy Burnham is today announcing £8.4bn investment in the Dreadnought nuclear deterrent
Now this isn't new money - it's part of the £64bn spending on the deterrent that Keir Starmer has already announced in the Defence Investment Plan
But what's most interesting about this story is the framing...
Here's the press release headline: "Britain drives defence to deliver security and growth in every postcode wtih £8.4bn nuclear submarine investment supporting 22,000 apprenticeships"
It's framed so the investment *in apprenticeships* is almost as important as the investment in the deterrent
And here's Andy Burnham's quote: "Security is not only about what we build, it is about who builds it, and who benefits from it. The submarines produced in Barrow will protect Britain for decades to come, and the 47,000 jobs and apprenticeships will change lives both in this town and in dozens of places like it. British money, spent on British workers, British firms and British skills, in the places that were written off for forty years."
The money isn't new... but the emphasis really is.
And it's an insight into how the new Prime Minister is going to square his natural domestic focus with the inevitable international pressures that come with the job.
