Possibly the earliest glimpse of the Somali ethnonym appears in Tang-era geography by Jia Dan (d. 805), later preserved in Northern Song dynasty texts, ancient China may have recorded Somalia as “Sanlan” along maritime routes.

In 1587, a Japanese Christian envoy’s ship was stranded off Somalia. The Muslim king of Mogadishu received them warmly, sending gifts, provisions, and even ship ballast, helping the Tenshō Embassy continue their voyage to India. #日本 #戦国時代 #Japan #Portugal #Pope #Catholic

Somali Corsair spirits? The Somali coast was so infamous for piracy that Renaissance Europeans spun ghost tales about it. In 1610, French voyager Vincent le Blanc recounts a haunting off Cape Guardafui, a Somali wraith that struck his crew, leaving several dead in its wake.

In a 6th-century account, Somali Christian crusaders crossed the sea to invade the Jewish Himyarite kingdom in retaliation for the massacre of Christians; part of the same Aksumite¹ campaign that culminated in bloodshed and the forced Christianization of Yemen. ¹ Axumite (Axum)

Royal French cosmographer André Thevet (1575) preserves a Sofalan informant’s tale: the Somali kings of Mogadishu and Adal launched a military expedition toward Indonesia, were blown off course to Madagascar, and raised 8 pillars with “Mogadishu” inscribed in Chaldean (Geʿez?).

Muslim historians separately used 'Raven' to classify Arab warrior-poets born to 'Habash' mothers in the Jāhiliyyah era as Aġribat al-ʿArab (Arab Ravens). ʿAntarah & Al-Sulayk are some of the best known Aġribat. The term later broadened for a poet/outlaw in Arab literature.

In the Isagoge an influential Aristotelian work of Porphyry, 'Accidentals' are explained using the colour of ravens & Aethiopians (Αἰθίοψ). In the translation into Syriac, Aethiopian became Cushite. Arab philosophers translating from Syriac used Zanj instead. Kuššāyā/ܟܘܫܝܐ

Somaliland— Laas Geel’s Neolithic figures with ankle rings and the Puntite chief Parahu depicted with metal anklets in Hatshepsut’s reliefs. @GuerraenlaUni has your team followed up on this new find? Does this suggest cultural motifs persisted into the Bronze Age world of Punt?
