Today, I voted against increasing student tuition fees.
Our university & student finance system need overhaul but students shouldn’t be saddled with increased debt for it.
A fair and just system will prioritise scrappong tuition fees & funding higher education through taxation.
@johnmcdonnellMP All politicians know this is wrong, they also know this issue will eventually need to be addressed - unfortunately, they will only be looking at this, not because it is the correct thing to do, but because they are scared of losing votes!
Level of tuition fees were frozen from 2017 to 2024 when the Government then increased them. Today it’s increasing them for next 2 years & is using RPIX not CPI. Increasing tuition fee burden on students is wrong & associating Labour with this is a huge political mistake.
Women will spend 35 years repaying #studentloans. Men? 28.
We encourage more women into university, sold them the same loan product, knowing they don’t have the same ability to repay.
In any other consumer environment, this would be mis-selling.
I said it to the @Telegraph Money today. I’m say it here too.

@thatginamiller@Telegraph I didn’t see this clamour for a change to student loans under the government that brought it in. Now y’all complaining that @UKLabour govt. should fix the problem that was not of their making & at taxpayers expense & you don’t want more taxes. Make up your minds.
@thatginamiller@Telegraph@MoneyShe_ We are fighting to assist students in further and higher education financially, however we lack the technology skills we require. We are positive however, that we will find an individual/business that will assist us - stay positive!
@simonsquibb Hi Simon - do you know a software developer/ business in the Leeds/West Yorkshire area who would be willing to assist 10 dedicated volunteers trying to assist the UK's young people?
I have already given out £426,683.58 of cash so far to fund people’s dreams! (Full list of who on my app what’s your dream)
Let’s keep going and now I am monitised on X we can do even more! What’s your dream? 👇🏻
@David__Osland Wise words and our politicians must surely agree, but they lack the political will to address this issue. Politicians can run, but they can't hide, students aren't going to let this slide!
I'm trying to think of a logical reason why a young graduate working in education or healthcare should pay a higher effective rate of income tax than a billionaire. But I just can't.
“I graduated from my undergraduate degree last summer… and I have £90,231 of student loan debt.”
Gina Tindale, 22, who went to university from a low income background, says the necessity to take out a larger maintenance loan has significantly added to her debt.

@BBCNewsnight The maintenance loan is a massive issue in itself regarding student debt. The cost of accommodation whilst studying away from home is crippling our young people. Government action needed now!
@PeterStefanovi2 The whole system of student loans needs addressing by the government asap - this issue cannot keep getting kicked into the 'long grass' - action now!
“The entire student loan system is crumbling, people have lost faith in it”
Martin Lewis says the Government “has to look” at changing aspects of the system, adding: “In the short term the very minimum is to reduce its repayment threshold freeze”
@BellRibeiroAddy We agree fully with your comments - what do you and the government intend to do about this issue? You can run, but you can't hide, student's aren't going to let this slide!
The decision to freeze the student loan repayment threshold is a one-sided breach of contractual terms.
Graduates shouldn't face retrospective changes to their loan terms.
Ultimately, tuition fees should be scrapped and student debts written off.

@narindertweets We also know someone who committed suicide over student debt, we intend to assist students and help their wellbeing - action is needed!
“If you tweak the system, someone has to pay...”
Nick Hillman, Conservative Special Adviser 2010-13 & so-called ‘architect' of Plan 2 loans, says students loans “have become a lightning rod for all the challenges faced by young people.”

@BBCNewsnight@vicderbyshire No disrespect Rosie but you are classed as a high earner and even you are finding this situation difficult. You are also part of the government, surely you can persuade your colleagues to address this issue? Students need help!
"It's close to £90,000..."
Labour MP Rosie Wrighting, who is on a Plan Two student loan, tells @vicderbyshire about her current repayment debt.

Thank you for advocating for us Martin.
I graduated as a doctor with around £75,000 of student debt, on a plan 2 loan.
I took out the maximum loan as I couldn’t afford to go to university otherwise.
Despite working as a doctor for years and paying my loan back, due the spiralling interest rates I now owe around £90,000.
This is a large chunk of money coming out of pay packets every month. Doctors often have to do a 6 year degree, and are more likely to suffer with paying back more of the loan than other graduates, yet still not enough to pay it back in full.
If your parents are rich or if you can afford to pay your loan back quickly, then you don’t have to be saddled with this tax on aspiration. The rest of us do.
These schemes restrict social mobility and the whole system needs to be reformed.
@RichardBurgon Well said Richard - do you any contacts with a software developer in the Leeds, (or West Yorkshire area), who would be willing to assist a group of volunteers, who are trying to assist the UK's students regarding debt?
Graduate debt is a national scandal. It is breaking a whole generation of young people.
It’s time for a serious discussion about cancelling student debt.
Instead, we should fund higher education through progressive taxation.
