@GergelyOrosz i think jira and confluence are ok, does this drill down into how they are being used? A lot of people blame tooling when really its the process around the tooling that is sometimes lacking

Or is it just that anything that is popular will be disliked by more and more people? Or the people who love these tools are the minority (eg managers) and those who dislike them have no say in what tool to use (e.g. devs?)

How is it that Atlassian builds tools that: - SO MANY people use - SO MANY people dislike (JIRA, Confluence. Previously also HipChat) They are defying the conventional wisdom for business success that starts with "build something people will love"

Our tokens per codebase: Gumroad: 2M Flexile: 800K Helper: 500K Iffy: 200K Shortest: 100K Both Claude 3.5 Sonnet and o3-mini have context windows of 200K tokens, meaning they can now write 100% of our Iffy and Shortest code if prompted well. It won’t be long until AI will be writing all the code for Helper, Flexile, and Gumroad. My guess is by the end of 2026. Our new process: 1. Sit and chat about what we need to build, doing research with Deep Research as we go. 2. Have AI record everything and turn it into a spec. 3. Clean up the spec, adding any design requirements / other nuances. 4. Have Devin code it up. 5. QA, merge, (auto-)deploy to prod.

@GergelyOrosz you can help build backend. If the CI has issues, you can help with that. If the backend is ahead, you can help build frontend/mobile. This is the only way to have maximum impact. Too many engineers get hung up on specialisation in a particular stack and develop blinders/ biases

@GergelyOrosz I think it’s worth focusing on diversification of skills between frotend, backend, CI/CD and mobile. This is because during the development cycle each of the stacks are never going to be in parity. If mobile is ahead, and you have the skills or able to learn them (1/2)

When you look at most CTOs and engineering executives at most tech companies: their engineering background is more often than not backend engineering. Worth considering what this means esp if they lead a co where the main product *is* mobile, web - or to delight customers!

@GergelyOrosz Google does chop and change their direction, for example in Google I/O 2024 they also started recommending Kotlin multiplatform as an option whilst still also having active development in flutter. I guess this has more to do with internal experimentation and investment though.

Interesting: Meta created React Native. It’s used (with components at least) in their flagship apps: Facebook (iOS, Android), Instagram (Meta Quest), Messenger (desktop). Google created Flutter. And yet none of their flagship apps use it (Gmail, YouTube, Maps, Calendar).

@peaceful_cult @jackfromohio It just means that your iPhone will anonymise your advertising ID (its a device identifier that apps can use to track it is your device across many apps and websites.
