My thoughts on Pres. @HassanSMohamud’s sermon yesterday:
President seemed to genuinely believe in what he was saying but unfortunately living in an alternate reality.
He looked broken/defeated/bitter and searching for sympathy from the public.
Unfortunately, public sentiment is not favourable to him at this time.
The vast majority of the public see the contradictions in his actions/rhetoric.
His comms team either don’t know how to protect his image or he is his own comms director. Continued failure.
President should ALWAYS have carefully composed speeches with specific message & purpose.
He should NOT be talking like a frustrated odey dhaqameed.
He should act PRESIDENTIAL.
Address the nation from HIS OFFICE- on key issues of national importance.
LESS is more in these situations.
On the substance - President reluctantly admitted he was out maneuvered by Madobe BUT is determined to push through with his election agenda - saying he’s willing NEGOTIATE/COMPROMISE on everything but elections.
1P1V elections must happen.
GREAT!
We all want that as well Mr. President!
But you need to make some difficult choices.
Here’s a plausible path that can make 1P1V wish a reality;
1. Declare that your are NOT a candidate. (Think of succession planning. Pass the torch).
2. Bring all the stakeholders and create an environment conducive for elections.
3. Appointment a truly INDEPENDENT electoral commission. Not the current HANDPICKED crew.
4. Extension is inevitable - ask parliament to give you the 2 yrs extension needed to implement FREE & FAIR elections. Don’t delay. I think the opposition would support if you showed good faith on the process.
5. Start local elections in Mogadishu. Show PROOF OF CONCEPT. Build a local independent election commission. Let the people in the capital ELECT their Mayor. Not the VS manufactured elections currently planned for the city.
This will add to your CREDIBILITY on 1P1V.
Let the process play out. Transparently.
In the meantime here are some low hanging fruits;
6. Focus/unite the country against the imminent Ethiopian overstay/invasion.
This is where you have an overwhelming support from the public.
7. Go back to the war on AS.
Liberate what’s left. You will be in the history books as the President who defeated the great threat to our nation/people.
Mr. President - in my limited knowledge this will help you salvage the remaining time of your presidency and possibly leave a GREAT legacy.
Tame your desires. Govern in the reality.
Finally, Mr. President note this - the path of least resistance is often the easiest way to achieve something great, but it may NOT always be the favourable option.
