so let me get this straight all of ai twitter was telling people to buy a mac mini to run openclaw, which is literally just a framework, an orchestration layer that sends api requests to actual ai models. something you can run on a $5/month vps. which is exactly what i do btw but when google drops gemma 4, an actual large language model that you can run and fine-tune locally on that same mac mini, with no api costs, no subscriptions, no third party dependencies, completely yours under apache 2.0 the ai community is silent you were buying $800 hardware to run a wrapper but ignoring the actual ai model that would justify that hardware this tells you everything you need to know about the average iq of ai twitter

as of this writing claude is now #2 in the app store & there’s a real non trivial downside scenario here for openai that many aren’t really grasping. it’s low prob but structurally interesting. lemme explain. if a clean meme forms on tiktok & instagram tying openai to the department of war, & that framing hits mainstream liberal users, the reaction won’t be analytical, it’ll be fucking visceral. most ppl won’t parse contract scope, defensive use cases, or historical precedent. they’ll respond to timing & symbolism. & if this perception hardens, the competitive alternative becomes emotionally obvious. an association that feels morally dissonant could trigger switching behavior, employee discomfort, media amplification, & even long tail brand drift. i’m not even arguing companies shouldn’t work with the war dept. that’s not the point. the point is that in a memetic environment, perception compounds faster than facts. & if that perception locks in among a politically concentrated user base, the second & third order effects on consumer ai could be far more significant than most people expect. again low probability cuz switching is hard but damn if they haven’t opened a can of worms.

The average CEO cannot tell you the difference between an automation and an AI agent. This breakdown (h/t @wadefoster) makes it glaringly obvious. An automation is anything that requires no-trust decision making (if this, then that). An AI agent is anything that requires some-trust decision making. The most powerful workflows that I’m seeing businesses use today are neither pure automations nor pure agents. They’re agentic workflows. Agentic workflows get the leverage of AI (read: intelligent decision making) that deterministic software never offered. But they also have the predictability of automations, where the cost of error is too high. Knowledge work will continue to get pushed further right on this spectrum as the technology improves, but today living in the middle is often the sweet spot.
