Fascinating voting patterns in the latest Italian referendum (Richer) large cities opposed the far-right government's constitutional reform more than (poorer) suburban areas. But *within large cities*, the richer medieval city centres supported the government more.
Gennaro Carotenuto@GenCar5

I ricchi hanno votato Sì al referendum per garantire l’impunità dei colletti bianchi. E in un attimo va a farsi benedire la narrazione fuorviante della “sinistra ZTL” e della “destra di popolo”.

@giulio_mattioli Voters can adjust their preferences to the wished level of authority strength through elections. Voters have no direct control over authority inbalances in the CSM. This reform was a very rare occasion and we missed it.

@parensius Meloni will go out of fashion to be replaced by... some other authoritarian-leaning politician that appeals to Italian voters' taste for authoritarian-leaning leaders. You see the problem.

As an Italian abroad, it's shocking how the Meloni government gets good press abroad for *doing exactly the same things* that Berlusconi governments used to do *and get bad press abroad for* 🤦‍♂️
Giulio Mattioli@giulio_mattioli

Fascinating how sympathetic centrist high-brow German weekly Zeit is towards Meloni here. Keep in mind: this judicial reform is the *same* that Berlusconi always wanted (but never managed) to introduce. *And we know what his issue with the judiciary was*x.com/zeitonline/sta…

@giulio_mattioli Instead of formulating catchy phrases for your reference audience, try to think a little bit: Meloni will go out of fashion in a few years, the current CSM will stay for decades.

@parensius The idea that someone like Meloni would be "anti-authoritarian" is pretty funny.

@giulio_mattioli The reform was *exactly the same that the Italian left advocated since the 1960s* in anti-authoritarian perspective. Some of us are still anti-authoritarian. Some others have chosen the much easier task of being anti-Meloni.

@parensius The reform was *exactly the same that Berlusconi advocated since the 1990s* to get the judges off his back, do you reckon he was right back then? Also: people in her government are personally involved in many legal proceedings

@giulio_mattioli It’s not that hard: the reform was just to update the judicial system to the western standard + she’s not personally involved in tens of legal proceedings as Berlusconi was.

What exactly is going on here? Is it just because she's a decently looking younger woman? Is it because the whole world has gone right / populist / mad in the meantime so the Italian right looks relatively moderate by comparison now?

the best cure for overthinking is to really internalize this quote: “All courses of action are risky, so prudence is not in avoiding danger (it's impossible), but calculating risk and acting decisively. Make mistakes of ambition and not mistakes of sloth." - Machiavelli

When you're deciding what to study in college, don't try to predict what will be valuable in the future, because that's so hard that you'll probably get it wrong. Instead focus on what you personally find most exciting. You can't get that wrong.

Addio, Federico Frusciante.
