As the sun sets this evening in Jerusalem – as has happened every Friday evening for the past few decades – Muslims will leave the Old City after late afternoon prayers, and Jews will enter the Old City for their Shabbat evening prayers. The video was taken from Damascus Gate. It’s the entrance to the Muslim quarter of the Old City, and yet people of all faiths feel free to frequent it, to come and go as they please. This is my city – the capital of capitals – a citadel of three different faiths, home to synagogues and mosques and holy shrines. It is the capital of the promised land, a land promised to Ibrahim/Abraham, the forefather of both Muslims and Jews. It is the capital of Israelis and the capital of Palestinians. This little video I took last Friday evening shows something so simple – how normal it is to co-exist. How normal it is to share this sacred city. How normal it is to live together in a land promised to all of us.
