I'm a libertarian economist, so you probably expect me to denounce this. Nope. Okay, here's a minor quibble: Of course landlords do some real work. Just not much of it. Mostly, landlords get paid for owning a house, not for building a house. They don't even clean the house, except by accident. The defining attribute of a landlord is not "a guy who cleans the house." Instead, a landlord is a guy who gets paid for owning the house. To the extent a landlord cleans the house between tenants, he is a housecleaner, a praiseworthy trade. Why does this matter? In general terms, when our economy rewards people for owning things, it encourages people to own things, instead of making things. Eventually this creates a landed, idle upper class who create little. In specific terms, every rental home means a wealthy investor with a long time horizon has converted a low-income, short-time-horizon homeowner into a renter. No serious person thinks that is a step up. The irony is that landlords become landlords because they have long time horizons, which is a virtue. (In economist terms, they sacrifice current consumption in return for future rental payments.) Unfortunately, would-be homeowners cannot just ignore landlords, because landlords drive up the price of all housing, by increasing the demand. (For deeper economic thinkers, landlords accept a lower return on home ownership, which lowers the return to homeowners.) In my opinion, that is bad.

Georgism sounds ok until you start asking them about how much a homeowner would actually pay compared to now, and then you realize it's basically just renters scheming to fuck you over for having the ability to buy a house. The most optimistic Georgists would have me paying roughly 5x the amount of tax I currently pay (which is already a ridiculous amount). The vast majority of homeowners would be forced to sell. If you're going to argue we can restrict Second Amendment rights because urban communities can't handle having guns in the way "rural Vermont" can, then why wouldn't it also follow we can't do the same with every right? Warrantless searches wouldn't reduce much crime in most rural areas, but they'd do a lot in cities! Literacy is dismal in Chicago. Why are we letting its residents vote without a literacy test? And so on. Rights are universal. If your area isn't mature enough to handle that liberty, then the response should be fixing your community's failings, not attacking the liberty. This isn't a new problem. John Adams wrote that "We have no Government armed with Power capable of contending with human Passions unbridled by morality and Religion.
