This evening at State House Entebbe, I met the first NRM Caucus of the 12th Parliament and welcomed the endorsement of Hon. Jacob Oboth Oboth as candidate for Speaker and Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa as candidate for Deputy Speaker. I congratulated them and reminded the Caucus that since the inception of the NRM, we have rejected bad politics. When choosing leaders, we must first ask what needs to be done for the people before asking who should do it. Politics must reject identity, religion, tribalism and gender chauvinism, and instead focus on solving people’s problems. Our priority remains wealth creation and social- economic transformation through productive engagement in agriculture, services, artisanship and ICT.

Ugandans want a peaceful transition at the national level.. Pres. @KagutaMuseveni knows in his heart that Hon. @norbertmao is the best speaker for the moment, leave alone regional balance. I love Hon. Oboth Oboth as a person. I also know that he would never go against the decision of President. So elders like Gen @sejudav it is important in these few hours to make @NRMOnline understand the importance of bringing onboard Hon. Mao as Speaker. Hon. Oboth can even be promoted to PM. I don't think this term is for a cabinet of fishermen and women. County first .... We should never front individual interests above national interests.. So let Hon. Mao expression of interest be submitted to CEC if Dr. Tanga cannot receive it. CEC will consider all and take a decision that is in the best interest of Uganda.

Afande Sejusa makes a very important point. In moments where a country seeks NATIONAL CONSENSUS, unity and institutional balance, it is not strange to have an Opposition figure rise to the Speakership. As Afande noted, this has happened in different countries through cross-party understanding and national interest. That is why many Ugandans believe Hon @norbertmao is the right man for Speaker of the 12th Parliament. A bridge builder, experienced leader and believer in dialogue between government and opposition. Keeping Rt Hon Thomas Tayebwa as Deputy Speaker while supporting Mao for Speaker would send a strong message of inclusion, unity and political maturity. Uganda needs a Parliament that reduces tension, fights corruption, restores dignity and works for all citizens regardless of party lines. We respectfully request H.E. @KagutaMuseveni , the NRM leadership and the Parliamentary Caucus to consider this historic opportunity and support Mao’s candidacy. The DP-NRM cooperation should not only be symbolic, but should also reflect trust and national purpose. As Afande Sejusa says, “it depends on what the NATIONAL AGENDA OF THE TIME is.” And today, Uganda’s agenda is unity, accountability and consensus leadership. Mao fits that moment.

NEW SPEAKER: Just read someone calling NORBERT MAO A ONE MAN ARMY; 🤓! Is he? Well, my view is a little different. Just from sheer optics, which ofcse may not amount to much, but still....Why Keep THOMAS TAYEBWA as Deputy Speaker in the circumstances? For me, the logic would be to create a situation for a MAO SPEAKERSHIP! Wouldn't see the logic of having both THOMAS TAYEBWA AND JACOB OBOTH-OBOTH....Just saying, 😎! Now in having an opposition MP becoming Speaker, it is not as strange, or uncommon as many seem to think. To FORGE NATIONAL CONSENSUS, Countries have appointed Speakers from OPPOSITION even where there are no CLEAR PARTY MERGERS, as such. Has happened in Australia, Taiwan, Kuwait, even Kenya here, etc. And it's common in cases where there are CROSS-PARTY ALLIANCES. Like this DP-NRM thing. It depends on what the NATIONAL AGENDA OF THE TIME is.....🤫!
