A pleasure to join in the launch of the National Gender Research Agenda 2025-2029, as well as 3 other evidence reports on green energy uptake, girls education in ASAL areas, and action on GBV. Proud to have been with @ReliAfrica in this journey. #datadrivenequality

Today I attended the take away session of the #AfricaClimateSummit from where I sit! - A fireside chat with @cmfrick, Director of @WFP Global Office Berlin. His thoughts regarding #ClimateChange, #ClimateAction resonates so much with my own. I will highlight some of his key points here… 1. We now know what needs to be done for #ClimateAction. We have the #ParisAgreement that stipulates. We don’t need to wait for #COP49! (He quoted President @WilliamsRuto aligned sentiments). 2. #FoodSystems/agriculture contributes at least 36% of carbon emissions, yet, it is heavily ignored in these #ClimateAction discussions. It only started being included around 2016. How can we fight carbon emissions if ignoring 36% of carbon produced by Food systems? It is all politics! 3. We need more support for local food production for local use in the context of many emerging crisis - not just food aid! Even in drylands & urban areas to promote food security, biodiversity, resilience, independence. Best quality food is what you grow in your own background. 4. Lets protect & regenerate our soils. Agroecology is the way to go! Promote use of organic manure & harness traditional/indigenous knowledge/ approaches to water conservation, food production including use of traditional food crops like millet. These traditional approaches have existed for many years in our communities including in drylands. Communities in drylands have outlived droughts. Cutting-edge technologies should be adapted to the basic level. 5. We need a paradigm shift - from industrialization, which promotes monoculture (and environmental degradation) to mixed cropping using diverse and use traditional crops. It is labor-intensive, but thats okay. It promotes biodiversity, food security & also creates jobs at local level. Agroecology is the way. 6. Urban farming would not only feed people, it provides other benefits including disaster risk management thru’ absorption of excess water during floods; It gives people back a feeling of where they came from. School farming in urban areas via children clubs is a powerhouse of change. 7. Bring climate action power down to the community - the grassroots - more influence to the local communities. 8. Land tenure for women needs to be fixed in the law. Women should have same rights to land as men. 9. Support small-scale farmers. Trust, respect farmers! 10. Actions in say drylands should first focus on food security; then biodiversity promotion; then carbon markets. #AfricaClimateSummit2023 #ACS2023

Food should be looked at as a fundamental right. Commodifying food contributes to hunger. To be food secure, you may need to produce your food hence taking yourself from the crosshairs of corporations. #RightToFood
