I attended the @AliAbdaal and @SahilBloom event at the London School of Economics last week, and I want to share some key insights.
· Ali emphasized the perpetual nature of the waiting room. Drawing from his experience as a medical doctor, he recounted his efforts to serve waiting patients diligently. However, even after his best attempts, the waiting area remained full. Frustrated, he discussed this with a senior colleague who advised him to prioritize his work and give his best in the allotted time because the waiting room will always be full. This serves as a metaphor for life—no matter how hard you try, that inner voice questioning your efforts will persist, like : “ Am i a good parent to my kids” “Am i making enough sales calls” “Am i creating enough content?”
The waiting area will always be full; focus on doing your absolute best in the moment.
· The discussion also touched on the influential power of flattery. Recognizing and praising others for their positive actions can bring out their best. Remember, actions we flatter may repeat themselves.
· There is massive arbitrage in sending a cold email: After meeting Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, in the gym, Sahil sent him a cold email, and Tim responded, leading to a breakfast meeting. This highlights the significant opportunities that can arise from a well-crafted cold email.
· Consider the idea that the quality of the life you're living now is a manifestation of what your past self dreamt about. Express gratitude for your present circumstances. This is the reason why i have been doing gratitude journaling for 10 years. Speaking of notes Sahil took note on his journal while Ali was speaking, it shows you how hungry this already successful guy is
· Sahil delved into two types of luck—Base luck and Motion luck. Base luck, tied to factors like birthplace and family, is beyond your control. However, Motion luck, stemming from your actions such as attending events, creating content, making sales calls, or sending emails, is within your control. Increasing your 'motion' activities expands the surface area for luck to land. Notice how an email he sent to Tim Cook created a solid relationship for him
· Lastly, the event highlighted the common struggle we all face. The difference between winners and losers lies in their response to challenges. French artist Pierre-Auguste Renoir, despite battling serious rheumatoid arthritis, produced 4,000 works, illustrating the power of determination.
The lessons from this event were profound and life enhancing
I also met the phenomenal Simon Alexander Ong at the event and i am looking forward to having a conversation with him on my podcast and i met him there because i went early.
Thank you for reading.
