The audacity of ignorance! Social media is notorious for giving visibility to stupidity. Statements made by this woman- the former Canadian MP Goldie Ghamari reveals nothing but her sheer ignorance of the Nigerian people and government. 1. There is no constitutional requirement that stipulates that the Nigerian government must be headed by a Christian and Muslim as president and vice president or vice versa. In 1993, both candidates that were voted in as Nigeria’s president and vice president were Muslims, in what was widely adjudged as Nigeria’s freest and fairest presidential election ever. 2. Virtually all the political parties that contested in the 2023 presidential elections fielded a joint Muslim-Christian ticket with the APC choosing to field a Muslim-Muslim ticket. Notwithstanding, majority of Nigerians freely exercised their rights to vote for the Muslim-Muslim ticket, as opposed to choosing an alternative Muslim-Christian ticket that were also available to them. This is the beauty of democracy! The right of the electorate to freely elect their leaders and for their decision to be so respected even when there are people dissatisfied with the people’s choice. 3. She accused the minister of lying while she herself was actually the one telling a blatant lie by falsely and deliberately labelling the Nigerian government as an “Islamist government.” An “Islamist government” is one that is an advocate or a supporter of Islamic fundamentalism and one who advocates increasing the influence of Islamic law in politics and society. Clearly, this is not a reflection of the Nigerian government. 4. The Nigerian government is not just made up of the president and the vice president. It is made up of the executive, the legislative, and the judiciary headed by both Christians and Muslims. As a country that practices federalism, government operates at three constitutional tiers: the federal government, the 36 state governments and 774 local government areas. 5. It is on record that the insurgency that began 16 years ago in Nigeria has killed more Muslims than Christians. How then does it make sense to any right thinking person that a federal government that came to power only 2 years ago is the same responsible for the killings recorded in Nigeria as this woman asserted?
