@elsieortong My concern is the subsequent by-election for the GM Mayoralty. Last week’s results demonstrate that it is far from certain from winning it. Is it really wise to risk it? Then there is the cost. Is it fair to impose an unnecessary significant financial burden on the voters of GM?

Burnham should be allowed to stand in the by-election. He is one of Labour’s best talents and has a proven track record of delivering for communities like Makerfield as Mayor of Greater Manchester. If this goes to a decision of the full NEC, I’ll vote to allow him to stand.

@JonTonge @LizWebsterSBF That seems to differ from Boris Johnson. He was Mayor of London when he was re-elected to parliament for Hillingdon. He seemed to want to hold on to both positions but came under pressure to choose.

To clarify re Burnham (re 5 Live interview earlier): He remains Mayor of Gtr Man until/if he is elected MP for Makerfield. At that point he would legally forfeit his mayoral position and a GM Mayoral by-election process begins. If he loses in Makerfield he could continue as mayor

@JonTonge If the NEC don't allow him to stand as a candidate, he can resign as mayor and stand, that has always been the case. Burnham didn't want to take the risk with Gorton and Denton which was a far safer labour seat than Makerfield.

It was an act of crazy, irrational narcissism for @Keir_Starmer to block @AndyBurnhamGM from the Gorton & Denton By Election, laying the foundations for the Greens’ historic gains & subsequent major Council election gains. The NEC won’t repeat that mistake again.
