This is the story of the crypto jews. Back in 1497, the king of portugal gave the Jews a terrible choice. Convert to Christianity or be killed or expelled. Thousands were forced to publicly accept the new faith while secretly holding onto their Jewish identity.
In remote villages like Belmonte they lived double lives for centuries. At night they would carefully light shabbat candles inside closed cabinets so no outsider could see the glow. They whispered ancient prayers to their children in hidden corners of the house. They baked matzah in the dead of night using whatever flour they could hide away. They followed kosher laws when no one was watching. They passed down stories and traditions in code so the inquisition would not discover them.
Families carried this secret burden for nearly 500 years risking torture and execution if they were ever found out. Some only fully returned to open Jewish practice in the 20th century when it finally became safe.
Today the world is full of so much hate toward Jews again. We see attacks on synagogues in multiple countries. Harassment in the streets where people are targeted simply for wearing a kippah or Star of David. Campuses where Jewish students face boycotts and threats. Open calls for violence that echo the darkest times in history.
Entire jewish communities could be forced to hide their faith once more. Removing Stars of David from their necks. Practicing prayers only in whispers behind locked doors. Keeping holidays and traditions completely secret for another 500 years just to survive another wave of hatred.
The Crypto Jews showed incredible endurance and strength. But no one should have to live that way in our time. Never again should mean something real. But as we’ve seen, it doesn’t.
