Democrats just held the Michigan State Senate in a special election that Republicans should have been able to contest. Low turnout. Disengaged voters. Same result every single time. Now zoom out to what is coming in November. Republicans currently hold a 53 to 47 Senate majority. Democrats need a net gain of four seats to flip it. Republicans can only afford to lose two. Michigan is one of the battleground seats on that list with Gary Peters retired and the seat wide open. If Republicans stay home in November the way they did Tuesday that seat flips blue and the math gets very ugly very fast. In the House Republicans hold a 220 to 215 majority. Democrats need just three seats to take the gavel back. Three. That is not a firewall. That is a speed bump. If Democrats take both chambers Trump cannot pass a single piece of legislation for the remainder of his term. Every agenda item gets buried in committee. Every appointment gets stonewalled.
