Graham Linehan should never have been dragged through the courts in the first place. The real scandal is a system that wastes time on litigious nonsense driven by professional activists while serious crime goes unpunished. We need to kill cancel culture. Free speech cannot survive if the process becomes the punishment. This is why I asked Toby Young to review the laws that are stifling free speech so the next Conservative government can put an end to this wasting of our resources.

There is plenty of oil left in the North Sea with more to be discovered. Why not step UK production up to 1 m b/ day? Average cost £20 a barrel. Current price £70 a barrel. Most of that profit of £18 bn a year would be paid to Treasury as tax. Get on with it.

86-year-old widow Edna Nightingale was prosecuted by the DVLA over a single letter typo on her car insurance. The retired farmer from Kirkbymoorside, North Yorkshire, correctly read out her Suzuki Splash registration over the phone to Swinton Insurance when renewing for £1,200. A Swinton staff member typed an ‘F’ instead of an ‘S’, so the details did not match DVLA records and her car appeared uninsured. She was convicted in her absence at Teesside Magistrates’ Court on 6 February under the Single Justice Procedure, given a three-month conditional discharge and ordered to pay a £26 victim surcharge. The 86-year-old, who relies on the car as a lifeline to reach shops and doctors because of her heart condition, endured weeks of sleepless nights and distress after receiving the prosecution letter. Her niece Nicola Booth has now stepped in to help with paperwork and the DVLA has confirmed it will review the case and may overturn the conviction.

Great article, it’s a real concern for ordinary people. Personally I will be hugely disappointed to lose the use of a great app like Revolut. Let’s hope our government doesn’t just kick these issues into the “long grass” as @richarddigard says it’s only going to get worse!

Very interesting article by @richarddigard in today’s Press about Revolut and how the Crown Dependencies are being frozen out of UK credit cards and the fintech revolution. I thought the issue was simply that online credit checks of the equivalent of the UK’s county court judgements could not be made here by UK card providers?

@AndyJehan @StatesAssembly Why do Jersey Lifts exist? Because taxi fares in Jersey are an absolute rip off. Maybe there are too many taxis all wanting a share. ie Supply is too large. Reduced numbers would create more business per taxi and enable charges to be reduced
