I talked with a man from Côte d’Ivoire in downtown Red Deer about coming to Canada, refugee programs, permanent residency, work, English, and integration. He told me he came to Canada and became a permanent resident after only six months, which he described as a long process. He also told me he does not have a job. When I asked how he pays his bills and survives in Canada without working, he became evasive and said his family supports him. That may be true, but the way he answered made me suspicious. It sounded coached, like he knew he was not supposed to talk openly about what support he may be receiving. I have no problem with immigrants who come honestly, work hard, integrate, and respect the culture. But we deserve to know: How fast is this happening? Who qualifies? Who pays? What are the expectations? How long does welfare support last? Why does Ottawa get to decide while Alberta lives with the consequences? Immigration should serve the needs of the country and the people already here. But it seems like the boarders are wide open and the system is not working the way many assume it does.
