The shock and horror inspired by this post among the political right, but most vocally from self-published fiction authors and Harvard Law professors (Don’t laugh!) illustrates the problem with their demands for “viewpoint diversity.” Biological anthropology posits that there is a bimodal distribution of traits used to sex humans, none of these traits alone being sufficiently predictive of behavior, anatomy, or genetics in many of the disciplinary tasks they find themselves engaged in. For example, sexing skeletons; consider why sexing skeletons may be relevant to the questions an anthropologist may wish to ask in the first place. Maybe an occupational stress marker indicative of hunting can be observed on the anatomy of skeletonized remains perfectly in the middle of this bimodal distribution of sex traits - height, jaw/hip width, etc. Does that determination make you believe that this skeleton is that of a male? Moreover, what research questions do the sex of skeletal remains answer? Are you simply looking to confirm the sex of this mystery skeleton as “male” because it reaffirms your preconceived beliefs regarding hunting? As the response to this post may demonstrate, people committed to ideological conservatism tend to prefer monocausal explanations for complex phenomena, but the presently dominant academic tendency is to explore deeply and fully every possible other variable in a research question, including political ones. The conservative inclination is the one that comes more naturally to humans psychologically, whereas the more granular academic mindset is a learned behavior. It is an entirely political decision to choose which mode of analysis is more convincing to you, and this is why conservatives are so comfortable dismissing academic work (even as they complain that they are excluded from it). It’s why the very real and physically observable existence of intersex individuals is willfully ignored by people opposed to present academic methodology: Any deviation from the most encompassing definition is an outlier, and must be ignored for convenience’s sake. Not the convenience of intersex individuals, of course, but the conservative’s convenience in not having to modify their language or considerations for the kind of scientific questions they are interested in asking. Gamete production in humans being limited to sperm or ova is not in contention, but what outcomes this gamete production necessarily entails anatomically, behaviorally, and genetically absolutely are. The conservative demand to allow only unfalsifiable statements to be taught and discussed is rarely applied to other similarly complex subjects, and in our political climate it is not hard to see why they have, yes, POLITICALLY singled this one bone of contention out. If we were to apply this logic to academia as a whole, the only statements allowed to be produced would be rote, functionless statements of fact, e.g., “A human is a kind of living organism.” Perhaps they would prefer forensic anthropologists only produce the unfalsifiable, strictly replicable work of classifying, labeling, and counting bones all day, but you would be hard pressed to find any kind of utility for or interest in this work in our present society
