Project Hail Mary is all the best parts of Interstellar, The Martian and Arrival, but is a million times better than any of them. Ryan Gosling channels every ounce of movie stardom, while Lord, Miller, Goddard and Pemberton knock it out of the park. Best movie I’ve seen in ages.

@CineSlamArena I do love the movie Armageddon, so maybe you’re onto something. I can’t speak to a movie’s cultural footprint in this marketplace, I can only speak to whether it was a satisfying experience that played fair with the audience, which I think Hail Mary does better than the others.

@Peposed i guess. it’s nothing new though. borrowed from several other films. you can use the same analysis for armageddon. mary is a good film but nothing like what some folks are describing it as. it’ll be forgotten about by years end.

@LegionofComics I said what I said, and I stand by it. Interstellar’s final third is such an abysmal cheat that it’s one of my least favorite Nolan films (besides the Prestige).

@Peposed Wait. . . What? 😆 its a perfect one to one in tone, style, amd vibes with the Martian. As is should be. Its no where close to Interstellar. Ypu may need to rewatch it if you think otherwise.

@CineSlamArena Sorry, I can’t agree that a film with a sense of humor is inherently lesser than a film that’s self-serious and grandiose. But I think Project Hail Mary’s themes of compassion, loyalty, ingenuity and bravery were beautifully explored—and actually played fairly with the audience.

@Peposed dude…it’s a kids movie. it’s great but to say it’s ‘better’ than something with a more serious tone or theme kinda falls flat. we can all enjoy each of them in our own way or for our own reasons. glad you enjoyed it though.

@nelsonblake2 That's a fair critique—honestly, I think we can extrapolate a similar premise over many corners of the industry. Runs are getting shorter, talent is being trained and cultivated less, there's less opportunities to grow, veterans leave for greener pastures. Brain-drain all around.

@Peposed A fundamentally strong colorist can adapt to the penciler but as a medium, mainstream US comics never corrected the tradition that began when photoshop emerged. We still don’t differentiate appealing rendering from solid fundamentals in color. Pencilers used to self correct.

If color is making the lineart, there's probably something fundamentally wrong with it. If used, color can add quite a bit but even for open lineart, you can finish it with one strong value pass that has no color. The industry just has too much tolerance for bad color work.
David Pepose - Comic Book Writer@Peposed

Every single comic I’ve worked on, our colorist has been our secret weapon. Colorists help establish drama, mood, legibility. Finding the right colorist whose style works with the line art is *essential.* Good art makes or breaks a comic. Good colors makes or breaks the art.

@Charlie_Kilo93 That *can* sometimes help, but I've seen that approach also backfire. I've had wildly talented artists who are too humble to realize they've leveled up, and will recommend previous colorists without realizing (respectfully!) they've outgrown them. It's a balancing act for sure!

@Peposed The best thing I did for our book was asking the artist for recommendations on colorists he worked with in the past.

Remember, a handful of your favorite creators - a lot over 50-make almost half of their income at conventions. When you see them selling books , prints and sketches, please understand this keeps their lights on these days and they are incredibly grateful for your support. These people also love to hear what you enjoyed of their work- what you do for a living ,and a bit about you- okay, that last one I am speaking for myself, but most love the interaction.

Choosing the right colorist will elevate the line art no matter what, whether the artist is a journeyman or a superstar — sometimes, they’ll even save the book entirely! But choose a colorist whose style is a poor match for the line art? You’ve shot your entire book in the foot.
