I also struggled with the idea of “two gods” or dualism initially. Gnosticism directly challenges the premise that "there is only one God" by positing a fundamental dualism in the divine realm. Gnosticism addresses the challenge of "there is only one God" by rejecting strict monotheism in favor of a hierarchical dualism. The ultimate reality is the ineffable, transcendent Monad, the true Father of Light, pure spirit, beyond all creation and unknowable through ordinary means. This highest God is not the creator of the flawed material world, but is the gracious God of the New Testament. The Demiurge is a flawed, ignorant, arrogant lesser being who mistakenly believes himself to be the only god ("I am God and there is no other"). In the Apocryphon of John from the Nag Hammadi Library, Yaldabaoth declares, “I am God and there is no other god beside me,” echoing but distorting Isaiah 45:5 while revealing his ignorance of the higher realm from which his power derives. What is the right amount of faith? Is it going to mass daily? Is it going twice a year on Easter and Christmas? Is it singing loudly in a choir on Sunday morning? Is it participating in faith formations or Saturday morning bible study? Are these the secret conversations Jesus had with his disciples and others when he resurrected and walked the Earth for 40 days? Gnostic texts suggest the true post-resurrection teachings were esoteric gnosis—inner knowledge of one’s origin in the Pleroma—rather than external rituals that bind one further to the material creator’s system.
