Always learning. Love tech and making it work for schools at scale. Opinions here are my own!

Dare you to find an earlier criticism of #edtech. "this invention will produce forgetfulness in the minds of those who learn to use it, because they will not practice their memory..."

Paperclip has faced some skepticism for being org-chart based Won't the infinite, all-knowing agents create their own organizational structures? Isn't the org chart anachronistic? Let me give you "7 Reasons why human org Charts Help Agents Run Things (CHART)" Starting with..

@dotta listening to your pod with @Wisemenmentors. Re: the org chart structure. Isn’t a bias towards understanding human org charts also baked deep into LLMs? Makes sense that I me to go with the flow of AI training bias to use that vs novel “know everything” agents.

Paperclip is being used to build over 1,000 public GitHub Repos! Hundreds of new people are trying Paperclip everyday What are all these people building?! I asked Paperclip to find out (I also asked him to make a blog because we didn't have one yet) paperclip.ing/blog/who-is-us…

Fun weekend! Saw @dotta talking about Paperclip.ing and literally drove to the nearest Apple store to grab a new MacBook for it. First co started working on a POC while I ran feasibility with the CEO. Couple hours later CEO and I decided to shut it down.

The man who has just redefined the AI landscape forever was just another middle manager doing Excel demos in 1993. Satya Nadella is one of the best if not the best tech CEOs of all time. Goat 🐐

One of the policy secrets to the success of Silicon Valley is on display right now. The employees of OpenAI can do whatever they want next because non-competes are not enforced Where non-competes are enforced, there are fewer startups & less dynamism. More states should ban them
Matt Marx@marxmatt

how would this weekend have played out if OpenAI were in Florida, New York, or another state that favors enforcing employee non-compete agreements? (reminder: @GovKathyHochul you have 43 days to sign the NYS non-compete ban. don't throw away your shot...)

If you told me 10 years ago that a group of the smartest engineers in the land would evoke the threat, "Do what I say or I will go to work at Microsoft," I would not have believed you. Amazing shift in corporate reputation (and much credit to Satya).

Everyone who subscribes to ChatGPT Plus is apparently going to get Code Interpreter in the next week. It is the mode of AI that I find both most promising, interesting, and unnerving. I wrote a bit about my experiments a couple weeks ago: oneusefulthing.org/p/it-is-starti…

The Homework Apocalypse is coming this Fall. AI completely changes how students will relate to homework like essays, problem sets & readings. And it isn’t just because of cheating (though that happens too). Some examples, and thoughts about what to do: oneusefulthing.org/p/the-homework…

Fall is coming, teachers. With few exceptions, you cannot teach the same way you did last year What are your AI policies? AI use is undetectable and is used in ways that are not clearly plagiarism How will you change assignments? Essays, cases, and more don't work the same way

📣 Big announcement! Today we are releasing three large language models that open the door for trustworthy generative AI in education. Built for the unique workflows and safety needs of education, our open-source LLMs are components of a broader generative AI platform for education that our team is building. The platform will enable teachers and students to have a generative AI experience that retrieves content from curriculum chosen by the user, not from the entirety of the internet. The result is an engagement that is curriculum-aligned, hallucination-resistant, and age-appropriate. Learning is boosted by curiosity. The act of asking good questions about what you don’t know is incredibly helpful. This careful study on children shows that AI can actually help kids figure out how to ask better questions, which helps them learn. arxiv.org/abs/2211.14228
