He didn't perform well as a coach (this role has nothing to do with a manager) in the first years and he was quite lucky not to be fired due to lack of results. Ferguson didn't actually behave well at all with the players during his whole career and all was some fancy media PR. United were a good team with some very good players but just a domestic football club in England. They won the Champions league with some late goals against Bayern and were portrayed as a great European club. In reality they were miles behind the top clubs in Europe.
