@RupertLowe10 earlier posted about his concerns about a large UK institution using just Halal butchered meat and giving them a chance to 'come clean' before he published about it. I'm sorry Rupert but there is a far more important point here, in my view. The law is being broken and the regulatory authorities know it, the UK retailers know it and I suspect that institutions breaking the law know it too (and probably quite a few MPs). The key regulation in question is the Welfare of Animals at the Time of Killing (England) Regulations 2015 (SI 2015/1782), which applies in England, with similar regulations in place for Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland (e.g., Welfare of Animals at the Time of Killing (Scotland) Regulations 2012). The specific provision addressing religious slaughter without stunning is found in Regulation 11, which states: Regulation 11(2): "Nothing in these Regulations prevents the slaughter of an animal without the application of a stunning method prior to slaughter, where the slaughter is carried out in accordance with religious rites, provided that the slaughter is performed by a person who has been both licensed and registered under these Regulations and takes place in a slaughterhouse." Regulation 11(3): This further specifies that the meat from such slaughter "must be intended for consumption by members of the religious community for which the slaughter is performed.'' This aligns with the exemption for halal or kosher practices and the regulation effectively restricts non-stunned slaughter to meat designated for specific religious consumption, reflecting the intent to balance animal welfare with religious freedom. The requirement for licensed practitioners and slaughterhouse settings ensures oversight, though enforcement and labeling remain points of contention. Furthermore, this regulation flows directly from an EU Directive, specifically Council Regulation (EC) No 1099/2009 which was transposed into the UK regulation. Article 4(4): "Member States shall ensure that animals are spared avoidable pain, distress or suffering during their killing and related operations. However, by way of derogation, the requirements of paragraph 1 [stunning before slaughter] shall not apply to animals that are slaughtered in accordance with Article 26(2)(b) of Regulation (EC) No 853/2004, provided that the slaughter takes place in a slaughterhouse." Article 26(2)(b) of Regulation (EC) No 853/2004: This allows for "slaughter carried out in accordance with religious rites," with the condition that the meat is intended for communities following those rites. The bottom line is that not only are UK authorities turning a blind eye to their own regulations but the same is true within the EU as well. I worked for most of my career helping food and drinks bodies to ensure best practice plus pragmatism was encapsulated into law in this arena with both UK and EU bodies and many has been the case of need that we put together plus technical papers. I'm also a qualified lead process auditor. We should remember that these laws are put together for the protection of health and the benefit of the general public. I have to admit to bemoaning the measurable reduction in the standards of our enforcement authorities for many a year but have been a voice in the wilderness. I don't have the clout or the reach to do anything about it. Rupert, you do and this being an issue that affects us all, I hope you take this further. There are voices on this platform who wish to see not only good law but just administration of it in all arenas. I hope there are others that understand that, whether you think the infringements are minor or don't bother you, the greater principle is that if you have laws, the establishment cannot cherry pick which parts they will enforce and which parts they do not. I'd appreciate legal views too,@dshensmith @SBarrettBar Other politicians or political commentators - @benhabib6 , @alanvibe I'd include journalists but I can hear them already saying this is racism rather than focusing on the importance of the law. Perhaps @TalkTV?

This is apparently happening fairly frequently Scott. I presume (or at least hope) that the police have all the necessary identification of the plaintiff before they send people to investigate. If they do, after a case such as Connor's here, why the hell are the police not going back to the plaintiff and charging them with wasting police time with malicious intent?

Simon, I had projects in Yugoslavia in the 1980's and even under Tito, the evidence of 'Balkanism' was real. I had one of my senior process engineers working in what is now Macedonia in an apple juice processing plant. We were there at the invite of Gligorige Gogovski who was the President of the Executive Council for the area and we had the services of a British diplomat (Michael Walker) to ensure 'smooth negotiations'. With my process engineer, Emil, we had a plan to divide the factory into reception, processing and packaging and he would spend a month in each bringing operations to a standard whereby the end product would meet our stringent specifications for concentrate to make Appletise(r) for our non South African operations (for which I was the Operations and Technical Director). It became evident to Emil very quickly that each area was run by different religions / ethnicities. Reception was run by the Muslims, processing was run my the Serbs and packaging / delivery by a mixture of Croats and others. The animosity was evident and Emil found that having sorted out one area, he would go to the next only for his work in the previous area to unravel in days. I suggested to Gogovski that the only way we could ever make this work was to 'multiculture' each area. I was told that could never happen such were the animosities and we had to abandon the project. We all witnessed the result of Balkanisation in the terrible Yugoslav Wars between 1991 and 2001, yet either stupid or evil politicians across the UK and Europe thought that multiculturism experiments involving exactly the same ethnic and religious groups was suddenly going to work! It was hardly ancient history and underlined the great Irish Statesman Edmund Burke's statement that 'Those who don't know history are bound to repeat it.'

As I have said elsewhere today Shabina, we would all do well to uphold the words of St. Ambrose, 'When in Rome, do as the Romans do.' I have owned a home in Spain for 21 years and my wife and I are now permanent residents and pay our taxes to Spain. Even then, we consider ourselves guests and live far way from ex-pat communities being the only English people in our village of about 600 people. You are right that history keeps repeating itself. I liken what is happening in the UK to Balkanisation and it is if we have forgotten the root causes of the Yugoslav Wars between 1991 and 2001. I wrote about my experiences in Yugoslavia in the 1980s a few days ago. Part of the problem is that too few are interested in history and culture, which is essential if we are to see the world through the lenses of others whose values are different to our own.

I always believe in the words of Saint Ambrose, Fr. Phil. 'When in Rome, do as the Romans do.' I don't understand why anybody would move to a country and then try to change it to suit the home lifestyle they have left behind. If you miss home so much then just go back and don't imprint on your hosts. As a permanent resident of Spain for a long time, I still understand that I am a guest, despite paying my taxes to Spain. My wife and I are the only English people in a remotish village of about 600. Although there are times I would like to come home, through the lens from abroad, I no longer recognise the UK as the home I knew and loved.

This is so simple: if you are living in our country, you accept our ways. You are not British if you do not accept the things that this nation loves; you are an impostor. If you attack an elderly man for walking his best friend and his companion, you do not understand our culture and have no place here. You, your parents, and anyone related to you should be deported to your country of family origin. If this happens related to a mosque, the mosque should be bulldozed because it clearly teaches a way of life contrary to the host nation. There is nothing unbecoming about a nation wanting to preserve its heritage and its people. I pray that this gentleman is going to be okay, as we all should. This is a bridge too far.

I have some sympathy with that view FRICS. Sadly, trust and integrity are long gone and the important pillars of a strong, humane and tolerant democracy, such as a true free press that hold politicians to account, an education system that educates and teaches the young to challenge rather than accept ideological views and a judicial system that we believe would give us a fair trial if we needed it, are long gone, more is the shame.

Of course the loss of 72,000 lives is not worth it. War is a filthy game. Nor was the loss of life on October 7th 2023 which fomented this action. I don't know what bit of Hamas, Hezbollah, and sponsorship from Iran you don't understand or the fact that Iran murders tens of thousands of its own people who object to its tyranny, even executing poor young women who have been raped and Hamas have been executing people from Gaza who want them gone. Perhaps you think that is acceptable? I don't. Are you ranting about those losses of life from the people who rule them with an iron fist? I thought not. I might even think that Israel goes over the top sometimes but then we are not in a position where regimes sponsored by Iran want to see real genocide with their goal of 'From the river to the sea.' I don't know whether you have family or would want your country to defend you when another State has the objective of wiping you out. I would. While we are at it, let's also consider the fact that a rogue state like Iran was reported to be close to its first nuclear weapon. This is a country that has attacked third party countries not involved in the strikes and seeks to cause global economic chaos by putting a stranglehold on the Straits of Hormuz. I don't know about you but I do not spend my day on X, so I do not need people like you, who hide behind a silly name, demanding that I give you an instant answer to your questions.

Official data from the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics shows Palestine's population increasing from 5.41 million in 2023 to 5.56 million by end-2025, while Gaza's has fallen by around 10% due to conflict-related deaths and emigration. So try telling the Palestinian authority that they are talking nonsense, Nick!

I'm just sick to death of this antisemitic garbage. Palestinians own official figures report 72,000 deaths since Israel's actions after the vile Hamas terrorist attacks on October 7th 2023. This is a long way from 'Millions of Palestinians killed by Israel in genocide' as posted here. It is true that the population of Gaza has decreased by around 10% since then but far more than the number of deaths is the number of people who have chosen to leave for understandable reasons. Furthermore the overall population of Palestine has increased significantly since 2023, further outlining the divisive cries of genocide and posts such as this will never renounce Hamas for using the poor Gaza people as human shields or actually executing them for demonstrating against Hamas. Let's not talk about the facts about the true genocide aim that is covered by 'From the river to the sea'. One thing is for sure. Until we have a government in the UK that does not daily exhibit its undeniable bias towards one particular religion, the grown ups are never going to be able to have the truly needed holistic discussions involving the faults on both sides that may one day lead to a path for peace and stop the suffering of innocent people on both sides of the divide.
