i went and checked what it means to read below 6th grade level and this means that ~130 million people cannot work out the correct dose on a children's medicine label, can't read their own pay slip, can't follow the instructions on a consent form before surgery, can't locate basic information in a short newspaper article
the average 6th grader in 1850 was expected to have read the bible and understand shakespeare
progress seems inevitable until you realize it isn't and it takes people of extraordinary abilities to make it happen
