@jnmarleau Thanks! Good to know (although probably longer than what they were looking for). I took a class through biostats and got a lot out of it back during my PhD

Question for Canadian stats #Rstats folks: any recommendations for certificate programs in biostats? I had a student near the end of their undergrad program asking about more formal learning opportunities, and not wanting to go back for a whole second undergrad

This is confused. He’s using “science“ to mean things that are true about the universe here. Normally, “science” means the social process by which groups of humans discover things and the imperfect collection of beliefs that our data tells us are true at this moment in history.
Richard Dawkins@RichardDawkins

Science is not a social construct. Science’s truths were true before there were societies; will still be true after all philosophers are dead; were true before any philosophers were born; were true before there were any minds, even trilobite or dinosaur minds, to notice them.

@kareem_carr @EpiEllie I come from a universe where there are 10 doors, you get to choose 5, then Monty opens 4, none of which you have chosen, and asks you if you want to switch from your 5 to that 1.

Have you heard of the "probability paradox" known as The Monty Hall Problem? In my opinion, it's BARELY about probability and is DEFINITELY not a paradox! It's OVER-HYPED by folks that get a buzz out of "tricky" math puzzles! I'm going to explain it to you WITHOUT ANY MATH. 👇🏾

This is a good question with a longish answer. But the short answer is no. The long answer (thread) Forest management practices (which have nothing to do with 'raking forests') have absolutely contributed to the size and intensity of wildfires over the last 100 or so years.
MJT@MJT36165368

@ErinEARoss Is there any truth in what Trump says about the refusal to clean the forest floor as a major contributing factor to the spread of these fires?

When you combine a great community with great organisation you get a superb virtual conference like @isec2020 I've honestly just been enjoying this week so much I thought I'd make a thread of things I like about it. I hope some virtual innovations stick around!

Ecologists: is this the best we can do?
Miguel Araújo@Araujo_lab

@wormmaps I didn't see any prediction of yours. But I don't take the blame for wrong predictions as almost everyone has been wrong about this pandemic. There is no shame in trying to use your skills to try to find answers. But when data are imperfect, answer will be so to.

@EChampagnePhD I was thinking the same thing when I recently saw a famous, chaired person in our field complain about reduced DG funding (allegedly) due to the EDI part. If anything the tenure and high-funding should make it easier to set and achieve EDI goals.

I’m actually glad that unproper EDI statement can lead to lack of funding in Canada (if that’s the real story). It shows the great commitment of our council towards EDI

The linked text would be funny if not an example of too common thinking. The reliance of the author on number of published articles as undeniable marker of scientific quality is harmful

I support an evidence-based approach to discrimination. Specifically, when there is manifest inequality, the null hypothesis should be the presence of discrimination, especially when supported by lived experience. The burden of proof should be on those who claim otherwise.

Tomorrow @isec2020 I'll be presenting a new Bayesian approach to calibrate tree-ring records for probabilistic inference of past forest insect outbreaks, in collab. with @Boreal_Spanish @IRFUQAT #vISEC2020.
