Francesco Billari, Rettore dell'Università Bocconi, ha scritto sul Sole 24 Ore un articolo molto bello sul tema dell'istruzione e del capitale umano in un Paese che invecchia rapidamente e ha pochi laureati. Tra le proposte, una in particolare mi convince molto: una scuola secondaria di secondo grado più unitaria, con un nucleo di materie comuni almeno fino ai 16 anni e una selezione rinviata, superando l'attuale frammentazione precoce degli indirizzi. È una riforma che andrebbe nella direzione di ridurre le disuguaglianze di partenza e ampliare le opportunità, senza rinunciare alla qualità. Mi chiedo: su un tema così strutturale, e così decisivo per il futuro del Paese, può esserci una convergenza tra centrodestra e centrosinistra in Parlamento? Una riforma organica e di lungo periodo, come quella che auspica Billari, ha bisogno di un consenso ampio per reggere nel tempo. Il senatore @SenatoreMonti, sul Corriere della Sera il weekend scorso, proponeva proprio convergenze tra maggioranza e opposizione sulle questioni centrali per il futuro dell'Italia. I have spent my entire life working on this and thinking about this for the past 4 years. I don't know what will happen in 20 years, but I can promise you that on the 5-10 year timescale, scientists are not out of their jobs. AI is going to massively accelerate the pace of science, increase productivity, let individual scientists make way more discoveries way faster, and is going to make science overall more fun. But the model is going to be collaboration between humans and AI, not replacement. The key difference here between science and e.g. software engineering is that science is not verifiable in any rapid/convenient way (unlike software), unlike programming. We still need humans for their scientific taste.

I think we are in the process of discovering that humans are bad at mathematics. A gibbon would scoff at an Olympic climber; the human body is not optimized for climbing. We're getting mounting evidence that our brain may be far from optimal for advanced math. No disrespect to mathematicians. I was a two-time IMO silver medalist; I'm just smart enough to appreciate that some people are much, much smarter. But it's starting to look like math is somewhere on the midpoint of Moravec’s paradox; between chess (computers surpassed us some time back) and cooking (probably many years to go, for general capabilities). It's fairly hard for us, and so it looks like computers are going to surpass us. AI math still has important weaknesses. For instance, AI systems have not yet shown any ability to identify interesting research directions, or develop new concepts on which further work can build. But they are starting to look superhuman in some respects. And once AI *starts* to become superhuman in some domain, we all know what happens next.

For the people genuinely interested in physics : this is an example of wishful thinking rather than evidence-based physics
